House passes $1.5 trillion tax-cut plan
The Washington Times ^ | December 19, 2017 | David Sherfinski

House Republicans passed their $1.5 trillion tax-cut package Tuesday afternoon, kicking the action over to the Senate as the GOP speeds toward swift passage of President Trump’s top legislative priority and the most significant rewrite of the tax code in three decades.

“Today, we’re delivering on our tax reform promise to the American people,” said Rep. Kevin Brady, the House’s top tax-writer. “For the first time in over three decades, we’re delivering a new tax code that provides more, fairer taxes, and bigger paychecks to Americans across the country.”

The House passed the plan on a 227-203 vote, and the Senate is expected to pass it later Tuesday.

The action will complete a once-unthinkable timeline to get a tax bill through Congress before Christmas, and comes less than two months after House Republicans released their initial legislative text of the tax bill.

The mortgage loan deduction limitation, frankly angers me.

Why, are you a loan shark? That applies to the interest on a mortgage. That's a big giveaway to the mortgage industry lobbyists.

To benefit people, they should allow you to deduct the principle, and rent.

Your observation about paying more reminded me of Hillary Clinton's quote about taking more for the common good:

“Many of you are well enough off that the tax cuts may have helped you. We're saying that for America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut that short and not give it to you. We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good.” – Hillary Clinton

(My comment made in jest -- I understand that not everyone will get the tax cut but so many, many more will.)

Exactly. Most people will get a tax cut. I have a small LLC and sure it will help minimize my taxes.

For retiree couples in a modest income range (say below $80k) who expected to itemize (property taxes, medical expenses/premiums over the AGI threshold, charitable contributions, etc.), sucks that many will end up paying more federal taxes on 2018. I'm estimating between $450-700 more in federal taxes. About the only way we can make that up is to reduce the amount of cash charitable contributions we make.

It would have been nice to see everyone who *owed* federal taxes getting a tax cut.

9 defections makes me uneasy, gives Flake cover and if he is joined by another it fails. I hate these cliff hangers it gives so much power to unworthy punks like Flake and Corker.

Look at it this way, since I don’t know what you are invested in, think about the general economy.

More money in peoples’ hands means more money circulating in the system.

Wealthy people will invest more and middle class people will buy more. The housing market should expand, even in the blue states, and people will need appliances, building materials and furnishings.

More people will buy new cars, and used cars as well.

The companies you are invested in will make more profits that should make up the difference...................

“Under the existing tax system, I pay about $900 in Federal tax. Under the new bill, I would pay $2600.”

Under the current system I pay $28,000 in Federal tax, under the new bill, I’ll pay $24,000. I’d say you are still ahead of the game compared to me.

I don’t, but when you start thinking about how high that is, please realize that home costs are very high in some areas of the nation, and I’m not addressing particularly rich enclaves.

This is a link to listings for La Crescenta, Ca. Yes you can find examples under $750k, but look at what you’re buying. Two bedrooms and one bath is the general rule under $750k. Look at all the listings above $750k.

This is a little bedroom community, situated in a nook on northern Los Angeles. Check out the listings, and costs.

This is one more evidence of these fools thinking they have to pay for the tax breaks they are giving.

Read that,... a lot less tax cuts to free up money from the middle class than promised.

Well, how about if we combine your income with my tax bill - then we’d really have something!

Seriously, I am quite well off, but I never saw the point of taking much income if you don’t have to. As a retiree, basically my income is whatever I want it to be.

The House passed the tax plan on a ‘227-203’ vote.....

There’s 193 Demorats in the house so who are the 10 republicans that voted against it?

Thanks for the info, but I have ze-wro empathy for a good many folk in Cali. Those in the Silicon Valley, the Bay area, LA, SD, Sacramento, Berkeley, Santa Clara, etc. I hope their market collapses.

It’s OK, you’re Goyim and you’ll just have to get used to it.

Just like Gruber pulled off, Mnuchin and Cohn have just given W-2 workers a permanent tax increase that they have no way of mitigating.

It is getting to be time we have to face the fact that it isn’t fair for the rest of us to have to pay extra in order to subsidize those who are fortunate enough to be able to live in houses that they own.
