Mondays deadly Amtrak train derailment appears to have been caused by an object on the railway, according to a government official briefed on the crash.
A preliminary investigation suggests maintenance problems are unlikely to blame because the incident took place on brand-new tracks, the official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
At least six people were killed and the death toll is expected to rise, the official said.

I tried to think of the physics involved, but I decided reviewing a video would be easier.
That the lead loco didn’t tip over seems to indicate that it wasn’t the speed that made it go AWOL.
Though I suppose that the trees could have helped to keep it upright. The loco seems to have had it’s roof heavily rearranged.
So, yeah, I don’t know.
If the engine is pulling, then if it goes off the track, I would think that the momentum would pull the other attached cars with it.
Unless it came to an abrupt stop.
It’s interesting that there is no word on the status of the Engineer.
AMTRAK spokeswoman said the blue engine at the rear was not under power.
I heard a recording that claimed to be the Engineer.
Said something like, “We’re on the ground.”
my bad
The train was built in 1999.
Engine at each end.
PTC was not in operation
Frick’n ell mate, I’m still waiting for the status of the engineer that killed and hurt a bunch of people a few years ago, running the NE corridor too fast.
Wouldn't be difficult for badguys to fabricate these things.
“I squashed pennys back in 1962 on a RR track. I never found most of them for some reason? Could it be?”
yep, my very first thought: maybe the supposed “object” that caused the derailment was a penny some kid was trying to squash. naaaaaaaaah.
Drove under that overpass many hundreds of times to work, lived in Oly for years. This is not gonna be terrorism.
Brendan Bostian is not being charged with anything after a lot of legal maneuvering.
Not even close.
Conductor
But not to steal one, especially near an industrial area meant to keep loose cars from rolling onto the spur line. I see lots of them and they are not very well maintained.
Oh, isn’t that special, people died and he’s not charged with anything. Somebody beam me up.
YES. Having lived in that area and driven under that overpass many hundreds of times, many years...etc. YOU HAVE THE ANSWER.
The greenies don't go that far north and they don't go after passenger trains. The area right up the road on the exit is nice. We used to eat at a restaurant there, held some adoption events a bit further up the road...no homeless.
Stupid liberal idiocy will be the answer. Thank you so much. And. So glad we moved to Michigan. I drove that area all the time. So glad to be in Michigan with potholes instead.
Nope. It's just the artist colony thing. It's a very very nice area. Lacey is quite pricey. No homeless.
Was just expressing that if someone has that much time to vandalize a place that public then they certainly have time to do something else just behind the barrier.
BTW Lacey has 4% higher property crime than the WA average which comes out to 49% higher than US average.
Here’s a link to a good AP photo of the curve just before the site of derailment.
No unusual objects. But it is a pretty good curve.
