Object on tracks may be cause of deadly Amtrak derailment

Monday’s deadly Amtrak train derailment appears to have been caused by an object on the railway, according to a government official briefed on the crash.

A preliminary investigation suggests maintenance problems are unlikely to blame because the incident took place on brand-new tracks, the official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

At least six people were killed and the death toll is expected to rise, the official said.

Was it concrete, like the kind Antifa used there in April?

Earth First has admitted to sabotaging train tracks in he same area. They are trying to prevent fracking materials from reaching oil wells.

Earth First has a LONG history of very bad behavior.

Other bad groups have branced off from them.

Earth First is the group that was spiking trees in N Calif in the early 80’s to kill loggers who would hit the spike with a chain saw, and the chain would break & kill or severely maim
the logger operating it.

They cut fences on a big cattle ranch on Hwy 1 north of Davenport, Calif in 1990 & ‘LET THE CATTLE ROAM FREE”. Needless to say, some were killed by traffic, and the fog didn’t help. They spawned ALF & ELF...groups that have burned down large building developments in Vail, and birned out large car dealerships on the West Coast.

Odd that some of the cars went right and some went left.

I think you’re spot on. That does not look like an 80 mph curve no matter that it was new track and “high speed rail”. They also bought new Siemens locomotives with PTC (Positive Train Control) but they were not in use.

I like the idea of rail transportation but do it right.

No. Not on this route. They would never increase it above 80. Facts:

My guess is that the government employee engineer was pressured to demonstrate that the Billion dollars had not been spent in vain and to pick up the pace.

Could well be. But the train did make that run at 79 I understand.

Odd that some of the cars went right and some went left.

Some followed the lead engine, others stayed on the tracks. Not uncommon in a derailment.

Serious question: Why don't trains have seat belts???

In those pictures, you can see that the “high-speed tracks” are not enclosed - anybody could walk up onto those from the road ...

Go to Europe or Japan, look at their high-speed lines, they’re all tightly fenced with tall barb-wire-topped systems, nobody can get in.

Any bridge is a strategic point at which terrorists can inflict max damage. Wonder if there is security in the form of sensors?

A cow... a penny... a giant boulder... an iPhone?

I doubt some kid trying to flatten a penny made it derail. Doubt a cow got up on the overpass. Right now it's safest to bet some kind of UFO. Unidentified Fatwa Object.

I just drove on I-5 over that exact spot late last night. The graffiti on the overpass makes it easy to remember.

Re: “Does anybody know if this train was being pulled or pushed? I’m starting to think it was pushed.”

Re: “Existing line but are the/have the tracks been replaced in anticipation of the new service?”

It was being pulled. Top speed 80 mph. The accident happened around 6 AM, which is total darkness at this time of year.

As far as I know, the tracks are brand new. The previous line routed through downtown Tacoma, which caused lengthy delays for autos and trains.

Politically, this is just another Left Wing multi-billion dollar boondoggle.

The train boarded in downtown Seattle. This is a work day, as well as a heavy travel pre-Christmas week, but just 77 passengers on board.

King County (Seattle) is also building an internal light rail system. Last estimated cost, $10 billion, which goes higher every few months.

The result? When completed, the light rail system will reduce rush hour traffic by 5,000 cars!

We could have massively increased bus routes and reduced traffic by 10,000 cars for $1 billion!

The tracks generally look intact.

Perhaps whatever was used to make the train jump the tracks initially became worn and the renaming cars stayed withing the tracks.

Mayor of one nearby town through which the railroad ran said emphatically in a press interview two weeks ago that there would be an accident because the railroad had not installed all the safety equipment which many thought they should - it’ll be interesting to see what the investigations end up showing......

Or the train’s speed was constantly diminishing and that kept the rear of the train on the tracks.

Going by the extensive graffiti I would say bad people have a lot of time to do anything they want there.
