Mondays deadly Amtrak train derailment appears to have been caused by an object on the railway, according to a government official briefed on the crash.
A preliminary investigation suggests maintenance problems are unlikely to blame because the incident took place on brand-new tracks, the official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
At least six people were killed and the death toll is expected to rise, the official said.

I see the info now about the 30 mph limit but I didn’t find that earlier, only the 79 mph that is typical of Amtrak other locations not on the NorthEast Corridor.
If limit is actually 30 - 35 them 80 give or take 1 mph is too fast.
Also saw somewhere today in reading on this that the curve was elevated meaning banked to allow higher speeds. Also haven’t run across that info again.
So much misinformation and false information floating around now; how much of what I found earlier is still out there I don’t know but it’s now hard to find, buried, or wiped.
It’s just strange that the rail didn’t roll over from flange forces at a speed over twice what it should have experienced. Until more information is revealed anything I add beyond this is pure speculation.
Yes, you’re correct. The sequence of reporting was confusing.
Haha. Thanks for reminding me of how glad I am to have left. Ick
There ya go. Thanks for posting this
The probable reason that the reporting was confusing from local sources is that Sound Transit and this highly subsidized train run is a sacred cow and jealously protected by our local media. I heard about this about 10 minutes after it happened. I immediately said to my wife that this was most likely a giant screw up by someone.
The more details that came in... the more I knew my immediate reaction was correct.
Perp was let off.
I think the rail car under the viaduct came off the left (in the train's direction of travel) side of the track, got hit by the container carrying tractor-trailer truck and turned upside down.
It was likely just in front of the car dangling off the left side of the viaduct. So, it was likely the third car in front of the rear engine and a car that likely contains a generator.
Journalists are apparently not required to take physics and logic classes. It would explain why they tell stories rather than give reports and are full of Fake News.
Interesting pic. Thanks for posting.
What are those devices attached to each of the continuously welded rails at just about the point of departure?
This mornings news, NTSB says train was going 80 in a 30 curve.
I think they have recently purchased new locomotives and refurbished the cars.
That’s not a good thing.
