The College Football Playoff committee has spoken and Alabama is in over Ohio State as the fourth team and will play Clemson in the Sugar Bowl semifinal.
Bama-vs.-Ohio State was debated heavily following the conference championship games on Saturday. Ohio State had a conference championship and more impressive wins. But they also had something Alabama did not have, a second loss, an ugly 33-point debacle against Iowa.
The decision was also controversial because it means this year's playoff will have no teams from the Big Ten and the Pac-12. Instead, it will have two teams from the SEC, including one team that did not reach their conference championship game.
Listening to playoff committee chairman Kirby Hocutt, it sounds like the Buckeyes' loss to Iowa may have sealed their fate even before the conference championship games.
"We compared [Alabama's resume] to a 2-loss Ohio State team, obviously that one loss at home to No. 2-ranked Oklahoma," Hocutt said on ESPN. "But more damaging was the 31-point loss to unranked Iowa."
Conference championships are supposed to be a bit of a tiebreaker if the teams are considered otherwise equal. In this case, the committee did not view the teams as equals.

Look how close Auburn was to being included....two Alabama teams.
But there are two SEC teams in. What would the football world do it UGA played AL in the final game for national champs.... another SEC conference title game.... other conferences would go nuts.
It’ll be like Alabama vs LSU, lowest rated championship game ever. Not enough television sets down there.
Two SEC teams in the final four is not controversial! That’s the way the original so-called national championship was engineered, to favor SEC teams. It has happened before and under this system, it will happen again. Move along. Nothing to see here.
Well, if they are going to have a stupid playoff, they had better expand the field to eight.
We need a play off. While we are wasting the next 5 weeeks with thump thump crap we could nbe watching a real champion emerge!! BAN THE BCS!!
WE WANT PLAY OFF!!!!!!!!!!! not crap
Need top 32 in Playoff!!! No more bribed corruption!!
I would rather see Bama vs Clemson round 3 than Ohio State put there for ratings and lose 31-0 again.
>>we are wasting the next 5 weeks ... <<

Not wasting. Bama is getting healthy for another championship run.
Ohio State will play USC in the Cotton Bowl on 12-29-2017.
Good Luck.
Bama wont get within 20 points of the Real OU. Oklahoma. In fact Bama could not even beat Auburn. UCMTU
Independents had a big advantage because they were not locked into specific bowl games like conference winners were. So an independent school like Penn State, for example, that finished the regular season ranked #2 in the AP polls could simply accept a bowl bid to face the #1 team in the bowl game that team was required to play in (against the SEC champion in the Sugar Bowl, the SWC champion in the Cotton Bowl, the Big 8 champion in the Orange Bowl, etc.).
This also explains why the Big 10 and Pac 10 won very few titles in that time. Their conference champions were forced to face each other in the Rose Bowl, so they never had a chance to get a #1 vs. #2 matchup unless those two teams happened to be Big 10 and Pac 10 champions.
When Saban was asked about the health of the team today, he said, "mostly healthy."
(The injured line backers are back)
” loss to Oklahoma doesnt mean that much, “
It means Baker and crew went into their house and kicked their ass then planted a flag in it.
If the Dawgs are in the title game, every tv set in Georgia not owned by a Ga Tech fan will be tuned in to watch.
I’d actually be happy with that. I’d rather see teams selected for the playoffs based on the quality of the teams rather than the anticipated TV ratings. Otherwise you’d end up with the abject stupidity of Notre Dame being forced into the playoffs as long as they didn’t finish 0-10.
And then let’s go to 64 and be like basketball. Bottom line is Alabama got in because Ohio State had two losses and in one of them gave up almost 60 points. That’s not a champion when compared to a team with one loss against a top ten team on the road.
