Mejia deportation case raises the question: What kind of society are we?
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | November 20, 2017 | Salvatore J. Cordileone

“Am I my brother’s keeper?” The Book of Genesis does not record an answer to Cain’s question when God confronts him after Cain’s act of fratricide. It leaves the reader to decide in the reader’s own conscience. How would you decide?

LOL There is no freedom without Virtue. (Socrates/Founders)

Funny how this Archbishop is living in the pit of Sodom and Gomorrah and excrement and he has an issue with people enforcing the Rule of Law with even our generous immigration laws, which are the best and most just in the World-—but he is fine with sodomy and baby-killing and theft (welfare and slavery) and talks about “Virtue”. What a joke!!!

This champion of virtue needs to understand that virtue formation in little children starts with the promotion of the Truth (God) and that normalizing baby-killing and the evil acts of sodomy are both demonic and satanism and will destroy virtue formation in any children exposed to those vile practices of pagans and satanists (other religions, btw).

The least of his problems are families who should go back to help their own countries prosper, so they can help make it a better place instead of an evil hell-hole which corrupts and destroys the people who remain.

Yes we are our brothers keeper.

And no that does not mean we are supposed to have open borders.

God gives extensive law about borders, trespassing, and landmarks in His word. It is never implied that these are to be disrespected. Rather He forbids them being disrespected.

A society based on laws. A society without laws is doomed. Let them come back the legal way. That is the only way they can truly be productive citizens. Until then they must go.

The United States is *already* such a society, far more so than any society in the past.

Bingo, and such talk mocks our generosity.

There are better than three billion poor people in the world. Sorry, my compassion just isn’t that big.

Indeed, Jesus said, "The poor will always be with you." And many of them are poor through their own bad choices.

I’ll take the real Don Corleone over this clown’s wimpering.

I don’t know whether Mejia should be deported or not and I’m not a big fan of breaking up families. However he did violate both civil and criminal laws by his actions. It is up to a court to take everything into consideration.

If the Archbishop were as concerned with the murdered and injured victims of illegal immigrants as he is with this man, then I would cut his some slack.

Save your sermon for someone who mindlessly cares, Archie.

Hugo Mejia has a nice jacket in the picture.

I wonder if he would give it to the next homeless person he meets... then the next jacket to the next homeless person - on and on until he has nothing.

I mean shouldn’t we all go stupid together?

I’m my brothers keeper or helper to the extent he can’t help or support himself, such as genuine disabilities. Beyond this, he needs to take responsibility

You are all ignoring the fact that "keeper" - as used by Cain - meant something akin to "animal-keeper" or (as we would say today) "herder."

One still sees the true meaning in the modern term "zookeeper."

Cain was - rather insolently, to be sure - posing the rhetorical question: "Is my brother an animal? Do you expect me to hold him in a 'keep' him the same way he 'keeps' his sheep?"

Regards,

Yes we are our brother's keeper.

"Keeper" comes from "keep" - a sort of corral or pen. Think "zookeeper" or the "keep" of a castle.

Cain was mockingly asking God the rhetorical question: "Should I be holding my brother in a 'keep' and looking after him the way a person might 'look after' a colony of rabbits?!"

No, our brothers are not animals that we should pen up and watch over like animals.

Regards,

thank you.’
i do not doubt your comment.
however, FYI, i have seen a number of applications or translations or explanations of the Hebrew word in question, keeper in Genesis 4:9, being hashomer.
it has several common usages, such as a care-taker or possibly a financial supporter or often...a guardian...for another person.........as was used by the Hashomer voluntary (guardians of Zion) defense organization in the early 1900’s Israel/Judaea, protecting farmers and other residents against Muslim terrorist attackers, murderers (just like today, alas!). Also, it can sometimes be an unpaid or paid custodian of another’s property, a tenant (responsibility for landlord’s premises), and more. Also, it can be translated in a number of ways, but usually for this verse (many translations, Jewish and Christian alike) it tends to come out as keeper, without any animal husbandry implications. Possible, yes. Usual, no. I think it probably here means pretty much what it usually means, namely someone who looks after the well-being of another or helps defend him or her. Just what I can glean. I certainly stand correctable, I do not claim expertise for sure, ha!! Thanks for your input!

I believe the rest of the Bible is the answer to that question and as it turns out - yes, yes you are your brothers keeper.

Fair enough. I interpret it as “are we supposed to be aware of our brothers actions/whereabouts/condition?” It comes off as an ugly churlish rhetorical question from a literary point if view. I hope I wouldn’t respond to God like that.

That would mean each US Christian is to be the keeper of every person in the world, or at least, every random one that decides to wander over into our borders at any particular moment. Nope, I can’t be responsible for millions of people. God surely would not ask such a thing lol.

Good thing we don’t share an unsecured land Border with China. That would blow that “11 Million Illegals living in the USA” myth to shreds.

I grew up hearing that Fences make good Neighbors.

I also grew up hearing the only good Commie is a dead Commie.

In today’s America I must have heard wrong.

Another lefty bastardization of the Bible - Cain made the statement because he had killed Abel and didn’t want to admit it - kind of like saying, “Was it my day to watch him?” to deflect his guilt. Had nothing to do with Taking care of those who would not take care of themselves....

“Don’t expect a Bible lesson from the SF Chronicle./s”

There are numerous accounts in the Bible of the Devil quoting scripture, as I dimly recall.

“Virtuousness” is irrelevant. The US does not have the ability to feed the unskilled unemployables of the Third World. Any attempt to do so will simply collapse our economy.
