It's true, I can't believe I've held this incredible pain inside me for so long but I have to tell somebody how cruelly and unfairly I was treated, Oh so long ago.
I was new to the Army, heading to Basic Training in 1969, wanting to make a difference and serve my country and America but what I encountered shook me to my very core.
Me, a wide-eyed recruit, got off the bus at Fort Lewis Washington and was immediately yelled at and verbally abused by this looming, big, (and mean), Staff Sergeant named SSG Gritman.
He singled me out immediately because he hated me and made me fall into a position I would come to know and hate, the FRONT LEANING REST Position, (*SOB*), to do push-ups I didn't deserve to do because I was nice person!!
This monster of a man continued to demean and harass me throughout the entire 8 weeks of training, always singling me out as if I were his pet DOG, never relenting, never cutting me slack, never saying he was sorry!
Well, here it is, the reason I confessed my pain and suffering from so long ago; I want to find former Drill Sergeant Gritman, and have Congress indict him on charges of having been mean to me those many years ago.
I’m sure the mods feel the same way you do. :)
I can top your story and mines true.
Master Gunnery Sergeant Largent beat the living crap out of me at MCRD.
We were marching down the street in the rain when I saw a guy that I knew was getting out for flat feet (no shit), all I did was throw a small hand wave to him.
IT’S CALLED BREAKING FORMATION YOU IGNORANT MAGGOT.
IN A COMBAT ZONE YOU COULD GET YOURSELF KILLED, OR WORSE YOUR FELLOW MARINE KILLED.
Needless to say I learned REAL GOOD, NEVER BREAK FORMATION.
Did I deserve it, OH HELL YES.
Do I regret it, OH HELL NO.
My Company Commander was a Machinist Mate Chief with dolphins. He had some kinda flash backs because he just kept yelling DIVE and then some maternal related words followed that weren't too nice. He could make up his mind about things. Dive ****** ******* on your stomach on your backs on your stomachs on your backs.. Atten Hut DIVE and he'd have us do it again over and over.
He had a favorite bird he liked to have some of us call ourselves. But I never seen one before but he said it was super sonic though and he'd have guys running outside in their underwear with sheets for wings yelling they were one.
Not joking a bit here, but when I had 14 years in the Air Force, I went PCS, to an Army community in Germany, with 17,000 Army and 2,000 Air Force. I went to eat at the Army dinning hall a few times. Without a doubt, it was the worst food I ever had. USAF dinning halls always had much better food. I dont know how those Army troops ever tolerated that awful food.
I’m having it right now ;)
(Our saying from my old days in the '50s. Graduated from Honeoye Falls Central, 1954.)
Rrrrruff! Hooah, hooah!
[Familyop, still in the forward leaning rest position and barking after all of those years.]
Yeah, so much rougher than, say, going through a frat Hell Week in the '50s that was designed by and for WWII and Korean War vets going to college on the G. I. Bill (as I did); or through the Camp Smith NCO School with West Point Cadets as tac officers and a platoon sergeant whose first military hitch was in Canada's Princess Pat's Light Infantry Brigade before he came to the States (as I did).
These "college" kids have it so-o-o tough.
My Post #108 badly written/edited--I didn't come from Canada, the sergeant did, not me . . . but I had him as training platoon sergeant.
lol - it’s what drill Sargent’s do
later.
I faced even worse. My Gunnery Sergeant threatened sexual assault against me - against my skull after he did all sorts of things to my lifeless body. Since then, I’ve had an unhealthy obsession with cleanliness, with guns, with physical fitness, and with paying attention to detail. I don’t even remember what infraction (if any) brought his wrath down on me, but I cleaned up my act in response.
Lighten up, Francis. (sorry, couldn’t resist!)
I was abused and humiliated in the hospital delivery room when the doctor that delivered me held me up and slapped my bare butt. And that’s not the worst of it they next stuck me in a box and jammed a huge needle into my ankle with tubes attacked and kept me there for a long time.
Yo Mama’s cooking is so bad the flies got a committee together to patch the holes in the screens.
I was abused as a child, because I’m the ELDEST of 4, the baby being the only boy. Had to shovel lake affect snow up to my butt, from the lake off Chi Town, even though we were 30 miles away. Rake leaves, grass, take out trash. NO ALLOWANCE either. Got stuck in the same room as the next sibling who was a a decade younger and a slob, who destroyed my stuff and never punished.
Got stuck babysitting the 3 ungrateful brats siblings, plus all the other household chores the age difference brought. /Scarc
“OK, if you don’t get that this is SATIRE, I can’t help you.”
Spotted it right away. Funny.
EVERY WEEK, I had to go to church four times on Sunday, once on Wednesday, and once on Friday — plus attend other miscellaneous services. I was forced to do it. I was abused. I wasn’t asked if I wanted to go. Waaaaa. Poor me.
My Drill Sargent kept jelling at me “Jody’s back home, *****ing your girlfriend” and I kept saying (to myself) I don’t even know anyone named Jody. Never found that guy.
Horrific indeed. I was still 17 and she was an couple of years ahead of me. :-)
