The then-governor was referring to the election of Barack Obama, who carried the commonwealth on his way to becoming the nation’s first black president. Obama also was the first Democrat to win Virginia in over four decades, and his party hasn't lost a presidential election there since. But it was Tuesday night's election in the Old Dominion -- where Democrats won the governor's mansion for a consecutive time and gained a near-record 15 seats in the House of Delegates — that has politicos wondering whether Old Virginny can now officially be considered a blue state.

Yep, federal employment is the driver of Va’s downfall and has to be cut back to save it. Politicians won’t do that, but Nature may.
Would like to see a county by county map please. Demographics of the north (feeding the swamp just north), GROWING immigrant population pulling levers, and who knows how many felonvoters contributed to the results......

Virginia is the Headwaters of The Swamp!
They were pretty Republican in the 1970s and 1980s (in the 1870s too, for that matter).
They went for the Republicans in every election from 1968 to 2008.
But now they are a Democrat state (again).
I don't think the urban/suburban/rural mix of the state is that different from Pennsylvania or Ohio.
But two differences: more African-Americans, more government workers.
The last GOP senator has been endorsing Democrats in recent elections, and the last GOP governor has had mucho legal problems.
Yankees, I am one of them, and 3rd worlders have changed the state to a slighter shade of blue from say MD.

If Trump can get enough support in Congress after 2018, he start whittling down the Federal agencies by firing all those Obama appointees. Once that is done, they will leave northern Virginia and go back the hell wherever they came from.

It's well known that with perhaps one exception (the Armed Forces) if you get a check from the government you're very likely to vote Rat.
This hand wringing that we have lost Virginia forever and it’s solid blue is an emotional reaction. Statewide contests have been close. The GOP has put up weak candidates. People talk like it’s California as the GOP can’t get more than 30 percent. Now that’s lost.

We should never quit on any State. I often wonder why Republicans tend to give up the fight so quickly. The President has been a refreshing change from the typical Republican who crumbles at the first suggestion of opposition. As despicable and disgusting as the left is, they never quit, they never stop moving forward.
Life is about taking the hits and keep moving forward, no matter what. No matter what the left throws at us. We need to get better at energizing, organizing and fighting.

VIRGINIA IS NOT A BLUE STATE! Four or five counties that suck the federal tit are whores for the government that feeds them, and are NOTHING like Virginia. The masses of their population are foreigners or from other states who moved there for the easy riches the gov. provides. Majorities have lived there less than 10 years.
Cut off all the Marxist foreigners living in these 4 or 5 counties and you have the real Virginia.
Yes, Charlottesville, Richmond (200,000?), Roanoke and Hampton Roads are blue - but they are not enough population to make us blue.
It’s been a criminal Marxist invasion, and if there were any way we could, we who are true Virginians would cut off all the counties surrounding/near DC, even give them their own state (North Virginia) - just get them separated from true Virginians!
