Dumont noted that the U.S. is evaluating North Korea's ability to target heavily populated areas of South Korea with long-range artillery, rockets and ballistic missiles. He also pointed out that Seoul, the South's capital with a population of 25 million, is just 35 miles from the demilitarized zone. The amount of casualties would differ depending on the advance warning and the ability of U.S. and South Korea forces to counter these attacks, he said.
In a joint statement issued Saturday, 15 Democratic lawmakers and one Republican- all military veterans - called the assessment that a ground invasion would be required to destroy the North's nuclear arsenal "deeply disturbing" and that such an action "could result in hundreds of thousands, or even millions of deaths in just the first few days of fighting."

I thought McTurd loves wars. Drop him on Pyongyang.
I’m certainly not a military planner but they would have to have a fully loaded plane to take out every single one of the artillery areas - one plane for each one - and wipe them all out immediately to protect Seoul, and have some ready to take out any areas where artillery fire is coming from that was previously not detected prior to any conflict beginning. That would be quite an undertaking but one that would be necessary. Seoul being so close to the border is a major obstacle.
It should be easy enough, just bring in a 50 million chocolate bars, twinkies, and little donuts, and drop them in the countryside. All those nukes would be unguarded.
Now how the hell did that happen?
Did they just find out, two weeks ago, that North Korea was located there, and a murderous threat as well?
Simple fact: China is the key. If China wants the norks to fold, they will; if not, they wont. To avoid war, pressure must be applied to China.
Air drop Slim Jims and beef jerky. They’d be like instant currency.
Drop plenty of Moon Pies, too. Koreans loved them enough to copy our recipe; they call them “Choco-pies.”
Getting more and more information about the outside world into the general populace of North Korea could also serve to undermine the regime. There are already some signs of it as technology despite all of the controls by the regime is allowing it to creep in and the populace is becoming increasingly aware of how much worse of they have it than other nations.
Seoul was around long before the “North Korea” and “South Korea” lines were drawn...not to mention modern military technology.
The general didn't hesitate a second. He answered: "we plan to handle the enemy's underground facilities by dropping five hundred pound bombs on the entrances to those facilities until they are buried under hundreds of feet of rubble."
The reporterette did not have a follow-up question.
I know.
Why didn’t they “bug out” in the 50s, and build up somewhere else?
The Idea is to evaluate their move and strike first! Thus destroying their ability to strike a decisive toll!
Need a 21st century equivalent to the St Lo breakout.
Rods from God ? Nuke them from orbit, it’s the only way to be sure? Catch phrases for armchair generals, but the reality is the cost will be grim for any military action to be taken against North Korea. The correct question though is what will the cost be due to American and allies inaction?
That was Operation Cobra which was tremendous bombing. The purpose was to destroy the German divisions and keep going. We wouldn’t keep going this time.
Nobody is going to “invade” North Korea. It is an idiot’s play tool concept, nothing less, nothing more.
NK guns are located clear across the DMZ and you can’t see them at Panmeujon (I looked). They would have to be taken out by MOABS and even small nukes to get them all.
However, I question whether plain artillery could reach Seoul at 35 miles. Maybe the more advance guided munitions. Definitely rockets. Doubt the communists 122mm shells could do it nor the 130mm arty (need to get up to date on these).
As for a NK ground invasion drive on to Seoul. Obviously some of these idiots haven’t driven the main roads from Seoul to the DMZ and back. Lots of places for ambushes, mines, blown up stuff (roads, bridges, culverts, etc).
Just ask the No. Vietnamese what price they paid when the got bottled up at Xuan Loc and stopped cold at An Loc.
Also, SK has good counter-artillery weapons, rockets, and planes too. Plus what the US forces have.
No, No. Korea won’t invade SK unless it is for a limited distance to make a point at great cost to them (like Sadat did in the Yom Kippur War).
More likely NK will start something small at sea, taking out a SK destroyer escort like they did the last time.
A lot of armchair politicians and journalists are going to look like fools if there is no invasion, either way. But then, again, they are politicians and journalists so being a fool is a normal state of affairs for both. (I’m a recovering journalist = SVN, Cambodia, Congress, protests, etc). Really has a way of biting you in the ass when you make an ass (and sound like an ass) out of yourself.
Looks like the AP wants to “infect’ this nation with the stuff they spew .....
