Washington (CNN) A federal grand jury in Washington, DC, on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources briefed on the matter. The charges are still sealed under orders from a federal judge.
Plans were prepared Friday for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday, the sources said.
It is unclear what the charges are. A spokesman for the special counsel's office declined to comment.
Mueller was appointed in May to lead the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Under the regulations governing special counsel investigations, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has oversight over the Russia investigation, would have been made aware of any charges before they were taken before the grand jury for approval, according to people familiar with the matter.
On Friday, top lawyers who are helping to lead the Mueller probe, including veteran prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, were seen entering the court room at the DC federal court where the grand jury meets to hear testimony in the Russia investigation.
Reporters present saw a flurry of activity at the grand jury room, but officials made no announcements.

Mueller is authorized to investigate "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation," according to Rosenstein's order.
The special counsel's investigation has focused on potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, as well as obstruction of justice by the President, who might have tried to impede the investigation.
CNN reported that investigators are scrutinizing Trump and his associates' financial ties to Russia. Mueller's team has also examined foreign lobbying conducted by former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and others. His team has issued subpoenas for documents and testimony to a handful of figures...

the indictment heard around the world
He testified that the meeting with that Russian lawyer started at "about 10:00 AM". But, timestamp on the Trump tower video surveillance tape showed her entering the building at 9:57 AM.
It would be crazy if it was Boente.
This sounds like grand-mal FAKE NEWS.
Particularly right after Fox and WSJ called on Mueller to resign.
Who was it who was sitting there lying to congress about the dossier and claiming no knowledge of it with Elias beside him? The Fusion GPS founder?
Fascinating. What do you think that’s all about?
Hilary, Comey, Podesta, et al can play for pay for years, but this Mueller can investigate and start indicting people in a matter of weeks. Interesting justice system we have.
Speculation Boente forced out based on comments from a few days ago and now he retires
he’s not the special prosecutor- he’s the special counsel...correct me if i’m wrong but i believe he can only recommend charges- not file them...
I think you are correct, Mueller is guilty of covering up the Uranium extortion ring. Mueller is guilty of accessory to extortion and racketeering.
No idea but it seems like not voluntary.
CAN MUELLER FILE CHARGES??? I thought as special counsel he could only recommend charges, not file them...please correct me if I’m wrong...
I know the scope is pretty broad, but I don't see how that could fit. Is he importing them from Russia?

Who’s the federal judge?
Hey RC what do you make of this and how is he involved...
You are corrected.
This sounds like grand-mal FAKE NEWS.
That would be an epic fail for CNN.
It’s a distinction without a difference.
PAUL Callan on CNN said he found it strange that today of all days Trump went around bragging about how he has been cleared with the Russian stuff then we have this news
and that Mulluer would have to report any major developments back to the DOJ and that may have got leaked back to trump
