As raging wildfires devour the lives, homes and dreams of Californians in an unprecedented scale, one voice has been conspicuously mute through day after day of crisis: President Trump.
This is not a man who is reticent to let Americans know what is foremost on his mind. He is also someone who should have learned by now after devastating hurricanes and the Las Vegas massacre that Americans expect their president to step forward with empathy and resolve in moments of national trauma.
Yet Trump has offered no more than a few perfunctory words about the Wine Country fires that have left at least 40 dead, consumed thousands of structures and stretched the physical and mental mettle of the dedicated firefighters and medical professionals to the edge of exhaustion.
So how can it be that the loss of 40 human beings on American soil did not merit a single tweet? The most forgiving interpretation would be that Trump, along with the cable networks that seem to attract his laser focus and have not made this a huge story, have a case of disaster fatigue. Perhaps the problem is that he hasnt been blasted for his underwhelming response: There is no surer way to provoke him to his phone. The most cynical speculation would be that he could not care less about a state that despises him like no other.
Devastated California awaits your leadership, Mr. President. Tweet up, if you care.

I thought they were just burning off land to make more room in their sanctuary for dreamers.
Once again, local government was in part responsible for this catastrophe; at least in Orange County. The fire started very small, but was not contained quickly; the helicopters and planes were not deployed fast enough and by the time that were sent the winds have taken over and it was too late. The comments that I heard on the ground were that initially they were trying to spent as little money as possible.
This from a state that’s been self destructing for decades.
They are praying to Satan for a major earthquake so the rest of the country can bail them out.
Where was Obama during last years yearly burning ?
I guess President Trump will be serving Michigan wine at state dinners.
Why not get your illegals to put it out?
Since when?
Mexifornia cries for help from America and President Trump. IRONY!
While 40 deaths from the fires is unacceptable; how many citizens have been killed by the illegals you love so much?
We’ll send help when you start obeying the law.
It has been less than a year since the wildfires in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Anyone remember those and the hate spewed by the far left concerning the same?
“Editorial: California burns: Wheres the president”
Trump should send aid to all republicans who suffered losses
In the Cacafornia fires. F the rest.
The Comical seems to forget that California is trying to exit the union and has declared itself a sanctuary state....but now they want all the benefits.
He is trying to arrange North Korea NOT drop nuclear weapons on California.
Where’s the Governor?
Some of that could be done by proper replacement of Federal (income) tax law.
Interestingly, the effect would be nationwide.
Other Federal law could also be rewritten and could forbid States from exceeding Federal law in those areas of regulation. This is already working in some areas, again it would help producers nationwide.
Im in the middle of all this in the Nuns Canyon Fire. As I understand it, FEMA money and individual relief funds are on their way. No one can get in or out of where I am. For him to come here where people loathe him (not me) with the entourage that a president must bring, even to one of the shelters, would be disruptive and hinder operations. He is smart to stay clear for a while.
Tweet—and send money from the red states.
