Not so with guns. The Second Amendment, as applied in the last 30 years or so, has become so perverted, twisted and misused that you have to see it now as the second original sin in the founding of this country, after slavery.
It wasnt meant to be the instrument for the worst kind of American exceptionalism setting up the United States as the most violent of developed nations. But it is now. The more we stand out for random mass killings daily, the more the leading cause becomes clear: the warped interpretation of the freedom to own lethal weaponry.

Leftists HATE
the Bill of Rights.
This is the talk of tyrants and slavemasters.
American and European leftists and their Moslem bedfellows are the cancer of the world.
Democrat cities are no longer America
The purpose is to protect against a totalitarian government from coming to power.
BARF ALERT: Imagine a totalitarian government with Mrs. Bill Clinton as the dictator.
Hear AntiFa scum are out of control (and yes I include the NYT as AntiFa) if they say this about theb2nd amendment just think what they’ll say about the first once the 2nd is gone.
In fact they already are - there’s too much speech, political speech needs to be regulated, etc.
Dark times for the Republic - but people are waking up.
Gun control is a moral crusade against a benighted, barbaric citizenry. This is demonstrated not only by the ineffectualness of gun control in preventing crime, and by the fact that it focuses on restricting the behavior of the law-abiding rather than apprehending and punishing the guilty, but also by the execration that gun control proponents heap on gun owners and their evil instrumentality, the NRA.
The private ownership of firearms is a rebuke to this utopian zeal. To own firearms is to affirm that freedom and liberty are not gifts from the state. It is to reserve final judgment about whether the state is encroaching on freedom and liberty, to stand ready to defend that freedom with more than mere words, and to stand outside the state's totalitarian reach.
The repeal of the Second Amendment would no more render the outlawing of firearms legitimate than the repeal of the due process clause of the Fifth Amendment would authorize the government to imprison and kill people at will. A government that abrogates any of the Bill of Rights, with or without majoritarian approval, forever acts illegitimately, becomes tyrannical, and loses the moral right to govern.
I would encourage you to read the entire piece. It is as perfect 24 years later as it was then.
If weaponry weren’t lethal, it wouldn’t be much good, would it?
Very interesting. If you overlaid a similar map of “most liberal places in America” it would look exactly the same.
FREEDOM be Baaaaaaad stuff, eh NYT??
The violent crime rate among Norwegian-Americans mirrors that of Norway.
Just sayin'.
Aren’t those numbers amazing?
Americans! Owning a large amount of guns!
And yet, the amount of accidents, mis-use, public display, whatever, is very, very low.
We are a very patient, low-key, people. Just don’t mess with us.
We are a simple man.

These guys always want to interpret IIA with reference to the actual weapons that existed then, as opposed to the private-government balance of arms. OK, cannon were perfectly fine back then and lots of people had them. Can we have cannon?
The cancer is these un-American hacks that hide behind the 1st Amendment.
The amendment itself is not the problem. Yes, its vague, poorly worded, lacking nuance. But the intent is clear with the opening clause: A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State.”
A lot of people think it was written to protect the Republic from an over zealous government. Like the Demoncrats.
Somebody should immediately notify the people of Vermont about that.
