Trump administration backs citizenship path for 'Dreamers': official

The Trump administration would support legislation allowing illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children to gain lawful permanent status and eventually citizenship, a Department of Homeland Security official said in testimony to Congress on Tuesday.

The Trump administration last month ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy, which began in 2012 under former President Barack Obama and offered nearly 800,000 young people who came to the United States illegally as children protection from deportation and the right to work legally in the United States.

The administration said it ended DACA because Obama overstepped his constitutional authority by creating the policy unilaterally and without Congressional approval. President Donald Trump called on Congress to enact a law to protect DACA recipients, and last month angered some of his fellow Republicans by negotiating with congressional Democratic leaders on possible legislation.

"Under a rational bill these individuals would be able to become lawful permanent residents with a pathway to citizenship," Michael Dougherty, assistant DHS secretary for border, immigration and trade policy, said at a Senate hearing, in response to questioning on the Trump administration's position on whether "Dreamers," as they are often called, should be allowed to stay in the United States.

A DHS spokesman did not immediately respond to a question regarding whether the administration's stance applies only to individuals who had DACA status, or also applies to those who would have qualified had the policy not been rescinded.

Earlier in the hearing, when asked what Trump would like to see in a "DACA fix bill," Dougherty recited a list of the administration's immigration priorities, including border control, expanding the ability to quickly remove people who enter illegally and do not claim asylum, better vetting, reducing visa overstays, reforming non-immigrant business visas and establishing a merit-based system...

What part of I have a heart for dreamers is hard to understand. His words, not ivanka or anyone else. His words, his political track record. We got anchor babies over the last wall debate.. we will get mass amnesty now and no Wall.

Pretty soon it’s going to be war.

Nope, unless some really evil people behind the scenes start getting off'd. Not sure anyone has the balls to start such a war.

Except that trump said repeatedly during the campaign that dreamers need to go (as in be deported) because obamas exec order was illegal. To now encourage legalization thru legislation, including citizenship, is the exact opposite of what Trump campaigned on.

People smart enough to recall Trumps actual positions, rather than his current pronouncements are hardly Never Trumpers as some here have suggested. That insane and illogical reasoning belongs over at the Conservative Nuthouse where ANY criticism of trump or any of his appointees (like worthless jeff sessions) is considered treason by trolls.

I am one hundred percent behind the president” I shudder. They sound like obamabots. No. rational person would be one hundred percent behind anyone. This country was built on rational thought and heated discourse.. Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea.. one hundred percent behind their dear leader.

Unfortunately, you do have people for whom loyalty to a political party or to an individual are more important than principle. You saw a lot of this with Bush supporters, who ignored, made excuses for, or openly defended policies in Bush that they would have never tolerated from a Democrat (including amnesty for illegals and liberalized immigration policies). If Trump signs a bill giving citizenship to Dreamers, I'm sure some people will twist themselves into pretzels defending it, or else they'll inform us that he's just playing 400 dimensional chess that we mere mortals can't fathom.

I think that's the most frustrating thing I've seen in recent years. No candidate is going to be ideal, but not everything Trump does is perfect (albeit I am very glad he's president and not Hillary).

I supported Trump in the primaries and gave money to his campaign, so I not only know that he's light years better than Hillary and the Democrats, but that he's also far preferable to most of the GOP.

However, that doesn't mean I'm supposed to bury my head in the sand when Trump says or does things that I don't tolerate in any other politicians. When I cut and paste a verbatim quote from Trump's Twitter account stating that he did not want to see Dreamers deported, some of his more cult-like followers accused me of being a "liberal" posting "fake news" (are Trump's own words "fake news" when they don't like what they're hearing)?

Those ready to jump down Trump’s neck never do. They fall for every negative headline like lemmings over the cliff.

I believe that a citizen should be someone whose parent’s are citizens, and not just that the person is born here. It is way past time to change that.

Not in Favor of the Dreamer’s getting to jump the line - that’s just a beacon for people to get here illegally so that their children can become citizens without going through the process currently required to become a legal immigrant and citizen.
