Trump tax plan targets Californians
Monterey Herald ^ | 09/28/17

The cost of owning a house would increase for many Californians under President Trump’s tax proposal.

Trump’s long-anticipated overhaul lacks key details essential for meaningful evaluation, including how to pay for it and how the benefits would be distributed between the poor, middle-class and wealthy.

But it’s already clear that one provision disproportionately hurts high-tax states like California, New York and New Jersey that did not support Trump in the 2016 election:

I’m so sick of the “how to pay for it” trope. Liberals are never concerned about how to pay for anything when it comes to their precious social programs, they just print the money or borrow it. But when it comes to keeping our own money, it’s, “Hey! How do you plan to pay for that?”

"The political implication in Pennsylvania is that there will never be another popular vote for a Republican candidate for POTUS."

You're being a little dramatic. If that's all it takes, then so be it.

SOLUTION for California: Simply allow Californians who itemize on their state income tax returns to fully deduct federal taxes paid from their income for California income tax purposes. The large reduction in state taxes paid to California by California taxpayers should be greatly appreciated by those taxpayers.

As for the rest of us...we don’t care how much or how little California taxes it’s citizens. Just don’t ask for the rest of us to subsidize them by allowing those taxes to be deducted from fed taxable income.

I live in the state, and I agree. CA

Our idiots in our capital have been writing checks with their mouths that their ass couldn’t cash, for decades.

Welcome to reality.

I am so gratified and grateful to see that the day has come when Democrats are expressing concern for people impacted by high taxes. Kinda gets me right here. Sniff, sniff.

Actually, even without a deduction for state taxes, California is already paying much more into the Treasury than they receive. Who is subsidizing whom?

LOL...

I think we make it up on the Fed side and with the reduction off corporate rate.

We consume more than others so my out of pocket should be less...

Stuck in the People’s Republic. I do my best to vote the bastards out every election, to no avail. Scores of my friends do the same thing. The tide is overwhelming. But for my local business, I’d be out of here. Dong our best to swim against the tide.

"As a result, people who more recently purchased their houses pay disproportionately higher property taxes than long-term homeowners — and would be hurt more by Trump’s plan to do away with deductions for property taxes."

That's a big kick in the teeth to companies trying to lure employees into Californica...

Had multiple offers; never could afford to live in CA on the offered salary -- not nearly as well as I was living in Texas without their "raise"... This would magnify that difference greatly!

I got an automatic raise when I was transferred to Silicon Valley from LA because of the higher living cost. Of course, that kicked me into another tax bracket with no consideration for the higher COL. But you take what you can get.

Erroneous headline. Californians are actually.l being targeted for fleecing by their own state legislature, led by Governor Moonbeam.

You were transferred; I was being “courted”. Big difference... But the biggest difference was having to live in CA; that was the absolute deal-breaker...

>> So California, New York and New Jersey should vote out the sons of bitches

We try, and the county election results show that. It’s the urban areas that are destroying us.
