In a poll, whites were asked whether the NFL players kneeling in protest during the national anthem are helping or hurting the cause of racial justice. No fewer than 85 percent said they are hurting it.
Clearly, this offense to the anthem and the American flag is the worst possible way to change minds. Blacks need to find a less divisive means to register their discontent.
Oh, wait. I’ve got that wrong. Those figures don’t come from a new poll. They come from a survey taken in 1966 asking whites whether “the demonstrations by Negroes on civil rights have helped more or hurt more in the advancement of Negro rights.”
In many respects, the country has changed a lot since then — partly because of those unpopular demonstrations. What has not changed is that whites generally resent organized efforts by African-Americans to raise grievances and seek change.
Detractors demand to know how such highly paid athletes have the nerve to question a country that has rewarded them so richly. They could ask the same question about Donald Trump — who owes his wealth to a nation that his inaugural address depicted in nightmarish terms.
Trump can insulate himself from the dangers he sees. But these players are as much at risk from bad cops as other black men. A GenForward poll last year found that only 26 percent of young adult African-Americans trust police to do the right thing, compared with 73 percent of their white peers. Small wonder that Colin Kaepernick and other black athletes want to draw attention to what they regard as a mortal danger.
Are there better ways for them to make their point? Maybe so. But it wouldn’t make much difference. To many whites, the only good black protest is no black protest.

By all means, keep protesting. That flushing sound you’re hearing is the future of the NFL.
Answer: they cannot win(politically)on ideas, so they act like spoiled children when they lose, OR they sell their soul to be "vogue" in a fake hollywood/academia created/brain-fornicated society.

* It does this week-after-week with no concrete goals for how to make it stop. (unlike the 60s where they had leaders with a plan, not just protesters) Some supporters say the purpose is “to make whites uncomfortable” If that’s why this is going on, I’m not willing to give up my escape from reality to “join the conversation”.
* Because protestors and their supporters love to cite stats like the article was full of. But refuse to even acknowledge stats that don’t support their opinion (even stats from the FBI or Obama’s DOJ)
* Because, even though the title is “Why do whites oppose the NFL protests?” I don’t think the author cares a bit about why I feel how I do. It’s more convenient to project surveys from the 1960s onto whites today than to actually ask AND LISTEN to people you disagree with. The NFL protests have been going on a year. Whites have been talking. Whites have been asking and answering questions. If you need to answer the headline question with stats from the 60s and opinions of BLM rather than the NFL, you have actively refused to listen or try to find solutions to the NFL problem.
Another effort to push the false idea that this is a racial conflict.
Not only whites oppose the NFL protests and not only blacks are protesting.
Americans oppose the protests because they are based on a false claim that blacks are unfairly targeted by police.
But most of all they are opposed because they are an insult to the nation, an insult to Americans and an insult to football fans.
Politics (especially wrong-headed politics) do not belong on the sports field.

This crap is all on Obama. The racial divide grew under his presidency. But the media and the left want to blame Trump for all of it. They need to look in the mirror.
True enough - you’d never find this liberal out late at night in Chicago’s South Side - no doubt he knows just how dangerous it is. For anyone, white or black or otherwise.

Exactly, I've been watching this play out on Youtube and other social medias and it's just not white folks that are pissed off about dissing our national anthem and flag. I'm not white either and it pissed me off to no end what these leftists are doing. I have a ton of respect for our Constitution, national anthem, and flag and all it represents.
These leftists, like this lunatic author, continue to live in their unrealistic leftist bubble and just because they have the power of the press, we have to bow down to their every whim. Just proves they have never read our Constitution or they just want to undermine it at every chance they get to continue their power grab.
I hate to say this but their day of reckoning is coming, peacefully hopefully but their ignorance of what the US really represents is at historic levels.

I was around in 1966 and earlier when Jim Crow and white attitudes were, on balance, a real problem for black Americans. This is 2017 and much has changed including white attitudes and the opportunities for blacks. What is a big problem for blacks today is the abject failure of particularly the urban black community to avail themselves of the possibility of bettering their lot. In fact, the hip hop culture is effectively segregationist. Peer pressure defeats efforts of many individuals to better their lives.
Why does the Chicago Times do it’s best to start a race war with it’s commentary section?
I know a lot of blacks who love God, family, community, country, education, doing the right thing, etc. I met a lot of them on a football field.
Why do Americans continue to support a sports culture that hates everything about America? Its obvious. They are miserable victims, America made them rich..now they accuse their fans of being racists because....uh because....
