I was around in 1966 and earlier when Jim Crow and white attitudes were, on balance, a real problem for black Americans. This is 2017 and much has changed including white attitudes and the opportunities for blacks. What is a big problem for blacks today is the abject failure of particularly the urban black community to avail themselves of the possibility of bettering their lot. In fact, the hip hop culture is effectively segregationist. Peer pressure defeats efforts of many individuals to better their lives.
