Diana Montelongo came to the United States as a 6-year-old from Mexico, brought by her parents in search of a better education.
Now a graduate of UC Berkeley, Montelongo teaches math in Natomas to middle school students.
The day after the 2016 election, she decided to share her story.
I came into the classroom and students were crying and hugging each other, Montelongo recalled. There were students that had to be sent home because they were afraid their parents were not going to be there when they returned.
Montelongo, 23, is one of about 5,000 educators working in California schools who are not just working with undocumented students but are undocumented themselves.
If DACA is reversed, we are losing teachers who want to be in the classroom, Montelongo said. Its impacting the students directly. We already have students who have had long-term substitutes the entire year.
Montelongo landed in her Natomas classroom through Teach for America, a national nonprofit in which teachers commit to working in underserved neighborhoods in return for additional training and mentoring.
She has been educating other Teach for America participants on how to support students who are undocumented and fear they and their families will be deported.
Its definitely a sense of fear, not knowing what my future holds, Montelongo said.
But if she has to leave her job, Montelongo wants her students to know why.
I want to be here, she said. I want to be here for the students. If I have to leave, I want my students to know it isnt because Im leaving them.
The Sacramento region has more than 13,000 DACA recipients, more than most states, according to the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank in Washington, D.C.

I imagine they need 7th grade math teachers in her home country of Mexico.
There are 2 teachers in Las Cruces, NM that have to go back to Mexico. There was a newspaper article about it but the article has been pulled for some reason. The teachers in LC came here as children, and were educated here I think. They went back to Mexico and then returned to NM as part of some teacher exchange. The exchange program was supposed to help them go back to Mexico and be great teachers. What actually happened is they were hired to teach in LC. It is a husband and wife, he is head of the Science department at one of the LC high schools, she does bilingual education. They have been teaching in LC for a while and somehow getting their VISAs renewed. Last time they went to get their VISAs renewed they were denied so they have to go back to Mexico. They are going to apply for H1b status and try to come back to again teach in LC.
The two teachers in Las Cruces have so far done everything legal, but I truly question the process that allowed them to do this. And for one of them to be head of the Science department- no citizen wanted that job? I know citizens that have got their teaching license and had a hard time getting hired while schools were saying there was a shortage of teachers- makes no sense to me.
More jobs for citizens if they send them all back to their own country; but now I do wonder how many citizens of other countries are now in teaching jobs due to us ignoring our immigration laws for years? This is crazy.
If she likes it so well why hasn’t she became an American Citizen...otherwise she is an illegal alien, that is a felony and she should be deported....NOW......Find an American Citizen to take that job!
Take your skills back to your own country & help to improve that country to the point where your countrymen DO NOT wish to come North.
What part of that scenario don’t you understand?
You have more ‘education’ than most True citizens of the USA & you demand special treatment. ENOUGH!!
Thanks to the US taxpayer, she’ll be one of the “one-percenters” in Mexico.
The State of California is a den of traitorous vipers. Federal law needs to change to make illegal border crossing a crime, and any state or municipal law that aids or abets illegals in obtaining housing, employment, schooling, or any other public benefits, is invalid, and those public officials involved in defying federal law subject to criminal sanction.
It would seem federal prosecution for breaching an oath of office would come in very useful here.
Is this one of those STEM things?
Berkley Grad...... no mercy, no quarter.
She’s not a teacher, she’s an indoctrinator.
She’s probably teaching in a school full of illegal aliens. We have them here and they score so low on the state tests that any improvement is celebrated. Lol
“How did a DACA person graduate from Berkeley?
Who paid their tuition?”
The same people who paid for
Barack and Michellee’s college romps.
I still want to see if Barack’s school IDs say “Foreign Student”
