Diana Montelongo came to the United States as a 6-year-old from Mexico, brought by her parents in search of a better education.
Now a graduate of UC Berkeley, Montelongo teaches math in Natomas to middle school students.
The day after the 2016 election, she decided to share her story.
I came into the classroom and students were crying and hugging each other, Montelongo recalled. There were students that had to be sent home because they were afraid their parents were not going to be there when they returned.
Montelongo, 23, is one of about 5,000 educators working in California schools who are not just working with undocumented students but are undocumented themselves.
If DACA is reversed, we are losing teachers who want to be in the classroom, Montelongo said. Its impacting the students directly. We already have students who have had long-term substitutes the entire year.
Montelongo landed in her Natomas classroom through Teach for America, a national nonprofit in which teachers commit to working in underserved neighborhoods in return for additional training and mentoring.
She has been educating other Teach for America participants on how to support students who are undocumented and fear they and their families will be deported.
Its definitely a sense of fear, not knowing what my future holds, Montelongo said.
But if she has to leave her job, Montelongo wants her students to know why.
I want to be here, she said. I want to be here for the students. If I have to leave, I want my students to know it isnt because Im leaving them.
The Sacramento region has more than 13,000 DACA recipients, more than most states, according to the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank in Washington, D.C.

Back to mexico, diana.

Imagine the political BS she’s teaching these children? This is the problem right here..this is why we have these idiot Millennials who think like they do, or rather don’t think. These are their teachers.
She can teach in Mexico—math and English.
She’s an illegal alien.
Deport her.
The attitude of these illegals is not one of enthusiastic effort to become a legal citizen and gratitude, its - you owe me.
Buh-bye.
YOU R KNOT BEAN TAR GETTED for deportation, A-holes.
Sheesh. Get a freakin grip....
They need math teachers in Mexico, and we have provided the training. They should be grateful when we send her back.
Agreed. There are warnings against feeding animals in Yellowstone Park. Not only is it bad for the animals but it is dangerous when you run out of food and want to stop feeding it. Not calling illegal aliens animals but the same principle applies: freebies builds entitlement mentality.
Too close to the truth I’ll bet.
This is part of that education. You didn’t have time (or inclination) to make things right?
They’re indoctrinating the next generation of freebie takers, er, Dimm voters.
Exactly. Why don’t these dreamers with all their free education and training go back and help their country? That should be their dream.
Yes, I agree.
And people wonder how I could estimate our in-state illegal aliens to be between 5 and 15 million.
There are laws here....
As the DACAns themselves framed the issue last week: “ALL of us or none of us!”
None of you. GTHOOMC
Think of all the good these “great teachers” will do in Mexico. I am sure Mexico needs Mexican teachers far more than we do. Far be it from me to deprive Mexico of teachers who are after all, Mexican nationals.
There are plenty of US born teachers who would be delighted to have that job with all its perks and fat retirement.
