Uber loses license to operate in London
NY Post ^ | September 22, 2017 | Associated Press

London’s transport authority said Friday it won’t renew Uber’s license to operate in the British capital, arguing that it demonstrates a lack of corporate responsibility with implications in public safety and security.

Transport for London says the car-hailing app was not “fit and proper to hold a private hire operator license.”

Uber, whose app is used by 3.5 million passengers and 40,000 drivers in London, will see its current license expire on Sept. 30.

The company promised it would appeal, and can continue to operate until the appeals process is exhausted.

In its decision , Transport for London cited its approach to handling serious criminal offenses and how it conducts background checks on its drivers. TFL also took issue with software that could be used block regulatory bodies from gaining full access to the app and “preventing officials from undertaking regulator or law enforcement duties.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he supported the decision, saying any operator of taxi services in the city “needs to play by the rules.”

“Providing an innovative service must not be at the expense of customer safety and security,” he said. “I fully support TFL’s decision — it would be wrong if TFL continued to license Uber if there is any way that this could pose a threat to Londoners’ safety and security.”

Uber shot back quickly in response. In a statement, it said the decision would “show the world that, far from being open, London is closed to innovative companies.”

Uber is having a lot of trouble in Socialist Europe. They are already banned in France, Belgium and Spain so this is just the latest. Having roadblocks to competition doesn't mean taxi service in these countries runs smoothly. I live in Spain and have to put up with multiple taxi strikes as the drivers look for more money and better working conditions. So putting competitors out of business does not happiness bring.

Uber lost all its credibility with me when they cut a deal with the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) to operate in NYC -- then promptly signed on with the TLC in a legal challenge to keep Lyft out of New York.

The people who run these companies are all full of sh!t. They're all about innovation, freedom and liberty until THEY cut their own deal, then they turn into overbearing "crony capitalists" just like the rest of them.

Did the muslim cabbie union and the muslim brotherhood mayor strike a deal?

Über makes traveling in cities like San Francisco tolerable.

I was hoping to use them in Paris but they are banned in France? Damn, that is terrible.

Their service is great and so far, no problems.

I’ve always suspected that Uber and Lyft are some failed Leftist social engineering experiment to get people to give up their cars. I suspect Uber and Lyft aren’t actually supposed to make money but to train people to call for a car when they need it, obviously thought up by people in huge cities who never really use cars anyway. Didn’t work out so well for them in that the only people who use those services are the same ones who already use taxis.

Ride sharing makes those cities tolerable, but Uber itself is awful at customer service. I’ve had several instances where their customer service (corporate, not drivers) was far less than helpful.

The same moslem pig who banned Uber in London recently observed that "terrorism is the price one pays for living in a big city".

But that pig has failed to explain why Tokyo,a city big enough to make London,Paris and New York look like country villages by comparison, has *never* had a moslem terror attack.

Sucks though. Uber costs about 25% of the cost of taxis in Croatia (not 25% less, 25% of the cost, as in $5 for Uber, $20 for a taxi).

In London I took one, it was fine and reasonably priced, but all the driver did was complain about Uber. I guess he got his wish...

“I’ve always suspected that Uber and Lyft are some failed Leftist social engineering experiment to get people to give up their cars.”

They say it themselves, at least Uber, actually. The CEO was asked why he keeps prices so low as they continue to lose money, when there’s so much upside available to them (often they’re half the price of taxis and always much nicer cars). He said that their real competition is people driving their own cars, and he wants to end people doing that.

It’s interesting...but I definitely like the alternative to taxis and having it available is a big deal for me when I travel - if for no other reason than not having to deal with crooked cab drivers.

I don’t know if they still require it but years ago it took years for a Londoner to get a taxi license. They had to know every church, bar, alley, you name it in London. They had to name to an examiner every turn to take for a 3 mile trip from point A to point B. I suspect that is no longer required with navigation systems assuring the honest route.

The same moslem pig who banned Uber in London recently observed that "terrorism is the price one pays for living in a big city".

I know it's widely reported that he said something along those lines but the truth is he never did. Here is the quote of what he did say and if you are still interested you can find videos of him actually saying this on Youtube while all you can find about what you said is from people who claim he said it. Nobody has audio or video of him saying terrorism was the price you pay for living in a big city. Here is the quote:

I’m not going to speculate as to how the police in New York should react. What I do know is part and parcel of living in a great global city is you gotta be prepared for these things, you gotta be vigilant, you gotta support the police doing an incredibly hard job, you gotta support the security services. And I think speculating when you don’t know the facts, is unwise.

They call that "The Knowledge" and it was so hard to do that they actually did brain studies of London taxi drivers and found that their brains grew as they gained the Knowledge.

OK,so he didn't utter those exact words. But assuming that you've given an exact quote here (something I'm certainly willing to do) he said basically that.

"Great global city"? Yup...London,Paris,New York *and* Tokyo qualify."You gotta be prepared for these things." In all-too-many such cities that's correct. But,curiously, not in *all* such cities.

So I'll re-word the indictment and say "guilty as charged."

Just sayin'...

Only part of the brain ‘grew’. Another part ‘shrank’.

You don't think Tokyo, New York, Paris, etc. are prepared for terrorist attacks? They wouldn't have people ready to respond if necessary?

I don't like the mayor of London. I don't like what's happening in England with the Muslims. My wife is British. My Grandchildren live in England. But there are plenty of things wrong there without having to make stuff up.

Listen for yourself

I didn’t say it was a good thing. The article I posted said just the opposite. But it is true that the learning was so intense it affected their brains. I don’t know if they still have to do it now that GPS systems are so common but I wouldn’t be surprised if they still did only to keep their numbers down and their prices up.

I don’t know why anyone would choose Uber in London.. Requirements to be a cab driver in London are insane... they literally pretty much have to know london streets inside and out to get licensed...

UBER just ignores the law, part of why they have all the issues they have with sexual harassment, because their culture is EFF the law, no matter what it is, we do what we want.

I've spent time in London as well as Tokyo. That certainly doesn't make me an expert on either city. However, one thing that one can easily notice to be true in Tokyo but *not* in London is that just about everybody looks the same.

It's my understanding that while Japan surely has foreigners visiting for business and tourism they do *not* let "foreigners" in to live there. They are an almost entirely homogeneous nation and society.

And specifically that means no moslems.

Of course if you point that "anomaly" out to Mayor "You've Gotta Be Ready For It" he'd call you a racist and an "islamophobe".
