I’ve always suspected that Uber and Lyft are some failed Leftist social engineering experiment to get people to give up their cars. I suspect Uber and Lyft aren’t actually supposed to make money but to train people to call for a car when they need it, obviously thought up by people in huge cities who never really use cars anyway. Didn’t work out so well for them in that the only people who use those services are the same ones who already use taxis.

They say it themselves, at least Uber, actually. The CEO was asked why he keeps prices so low as they continue to lose money, when there’s so much upside available to them (often they’re half the price of taxis and always much nicer cars). He said that their real competition is people driving their own cars, and he wants to end people doing that.
It’s interesting...but I definitely like the alternative to taxis and having it available is a big deal for me when I travel - if for no other reason than not having to deal with crooked cab drivers.
My son and daughter-in-law in D.C. have a car but use it only a little. Uber is super convenient for their needs.
The car requires that they unlock and open the back yard parking pad gate, back the car out, relock the gate, drive to the destination and then FIND PARKING. So short trips in the city are a production.
