A university president in Tennessee apologized Friday for hosting black students in his home, which displayed a cotton decoration.
Randy Lowry, president of Lipscomb University, apologized for showing centerpieces bearing cotton stalks while hosting black students at his home in an email sent to the school Friday and posted on Facebook.
The content of the centerpieces was offensive, and I could have handled the situation with more sensitivity, said Lowry. I sincerely apologize for the discomfort, anger or disappointment we caused and solicit your forgiveness.
The president reported that multiple students confided in him about the cotton decoration displayed during a Thursday dinner he hosted at his home for black students to share their experiences at Lipscomb with him.
I have heard from a number of students who would like to spend more time together engaging in conversation, said Lowry. I am most pleased to do so either in small groups or individually.
Other schools have taken action to try to redress the grievances of black students. The University of Missouri hosted segregated microaggression therapy sessions in August. (RELATED: Mizzou Offers Microaggressions Therapy For Black Students Surviving At White Institution)
The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to Lowry and Lipscomb for comment, but received none in time for press.

I don't know of any slaves in America that picked cotton in the 20th or 21st century.
I assure you we in D.C. are not cotton factors. Indeed, we do nothing productive here.
I have family that lives on cottonwood street!! Ut oh
In my fantasy world, the administrator would instead say, “I believe you’d be happier at a different university. I’ll personally bring you papers tomorrow. I’ll start working on that right away; you can show yourselves out.”
I could understand if he displayed handcuffs, whips, chains, and a noose. But Cotten? Beyond assanine.
I drank heavily last evening and have cotton mouth this morning. Should I apologize for this?
>>As far as I’m aware, electrical engineers are still using the term “master-slave flip-flop.”
Computer hardware engineers are being re-educated to no longer use “master-slave” storage drive devices or even “male-female” connections/adapters.
“University President Apologizes For Hosting Black Students In Home With Cotton Decoration (PIC!)”
Very weak university president. Trouble ahead.

Nothing a homosexual with a sex dungeon in his home wouldn’t possess.
What about the manila folders? Do they trigger the Flips? /s
There comes a point that when a person takes offense, it’s because they want to be open to it and will latch upon anything to take it.
Looks like she’s having a stroke.
We should be so lucky.
I worked in a nursing home and several of the white women residents told me how they picked cotton. To assume only blacks picked cotton is racist.
Let’s say that you doubted your own worthiness but were starting out at a major university.
Let’s say you we’re not stupid but thought maybe you had lucked out a little and there was a really good chance that you would soon flunk out:
wouldn’t you want to begin your academic career having the top school administrators IN DEBT to you somehow..?
I sure would.
With campus as being fairly political places it would probably serve as a kind of flunk out insurance.
I don’t know why some people can’t see it:
this is a very practical political scam with clear material objectives.
These are kids who come from neighborhoods where once or twice they had a gun shoved in their face, yet they fall into a bag of nerves after **seeing cotton**..??
come on, this has “scam” written allllll over it.

This could have been a teachable moment. Cotton is a symbol of opportunity. It is a symbol of what can be made from a simple plant. Cotton is not racist. Cotton is a crop grown around the world. It is beautiful in a centerpiece or in a wreath. It is like a flower. However, cotton is more valuable than flowers in mass quantities. Because you can make all kinds of things from cotton if you are willing to work to do it. You can use cotton made goods to make art, medical supplies, feminine supplies, etc. Cotton is worth a lot more than a degree in aggrieved studies.
Quit having conversations and teach these children to produce something that others value.
How about corn and tobacco? Okra? Orchard fruit? Timber? (Right, no more wood houses).
And on, and on, and on, and on...unmitigated Bullshit, all!
He’s lucky he did not also have a tobacco plant in there! The offended ones could spew their hatred of cotton between puffs of KOOLS.
I know that schools in SE Missouri boot heel used to have “Cotton-Picking Vacation” so that students could get in the field and help harvest the crop. Whites and blacks participated.
That said, if Eli Whitney’s cotton gin hadn’t made short-staple cotton production profitable, slavery might well have died out in the US for economic reasons. In 1800 slavery was looked upon as a dying institution. I believe it is one reason why the Founders decided to compromise over the issue.
