“Just think if we had a Free Republic channel for those rare times that FR is off line!”

That seems like a really good idea - although the DUmmies would barge in, I’m sure. If there were a way to keep it closed to only FR, it sounds interesting.

“People who go out looting aren’t doing it in defiance of death or they wouldn’t be doing it. There ain’t a pair of Air Jordans nor any TV on earth worth being dead over.”

Those looters in NOLA weren’t stealing essentials, either. They were risking “being dead”. They can’t help themselves from stealing; it’s what they do. (Maybe a GEICO commercial?)

“Zello needs a smart phone (Android or i-Phone) with the Zello client and a working wi-fi connection to your phone”

I think it’ll work w/o a smart phone, and just a PC. Not positive, though.

We had gust well over 100. The NHC hasn’t gotten anything fight about this storm. Check our local ECO for on scene info. Been through some really big ones. Camille, Fredrick, Elena, Katrina. Irma was no picnic.

Is it my imagination, or did the Hurricane IV thread have a couple thousand posts yesterday, but only 600-ish now?

You can password protect your channel and/or make it private. Conversely, you can leave it public, but only give speaking privileges to trusted participants.

Latest forecasts have it making a sharper northwest turn than before. Apt to spare the Carolinas but put Mississippi and Arkansas more in play.

And notice Jose has drifted further north as well. If a good jet stream push comes along, it will miss the U.S. entrely, however the NW drift of Irma would make me think it will strike the mid-Atlantic states as a weaker storm.

Checking back in. Special needs shelter I worked at lost power, went to generator, took about 10 minutes to make the switch, pretty scary for the patients that needed electricity, lots of leaks but roof held. I set up a ham radio station to the county emergency operations center. Ceiling tile got soaked and fell right where my station was, but I moved just a couple minutes before. Put a large trashcan to catch it and made all the patients smile when it happened so soon after. I kept reassuring them that it was just a little leak and all was fine. They liked listening to the local Emergency Coordinator on the radio. Then the staff got panicky when their radios started having trouble, until they used the ham radios to talk directly to the EOC. That allowed them to focus on the needs of the shelter residents... Until two of our repeater towers failed and I had to use my mobile radio. Spent the last few hours sitting in the comfort of my truck in a inset doorway protected from the storm in perfect radio contact. The shelter never needed to use us, but we were there if they did. Verizon cell service keep service thru the entire event. Just made it home, trees down everywhere but none on my house or cars, didnt loose a shingle. Haven’t slept in a couple days, time to rest then get the generator fired up for A/C and chainsaw to start clearing limbs. Sorry for long ramble, but off to sleep now

I think Florida got lucky. Irma could very well have hit Miami as a strong Cat 4. The only thing that prevented it was: Irma’s interaction with the steering trough came a bit later than predicted. This allowed her to drift a little farther west, into the mountains of Cuba... where she lost a lot of organization and strength.

Plus, it seems the worst of the storm surge hit in the least populated areas, and at LOW tide. It COULD have been much much worse.

Was there hype ? Yes.. plenty. But all in all? The forecasting of this storm was as good as could be expected. I think we need a total re-think of the best ways to survive these storms. Mass evacuation is too slow and brings its own set of dangers. Targeted evacuation. Localized wind shelters and quick after-math response might be better options.

Not lucky.

Blessed. Protected.

This could have been every bit as bad as forecast.

Nobody should be blaming the NWS for the intervention of God.
