The entire Florida Peninsula and points north are poised to experience Hurricane Irma after the storm hugged Cuba's northern coastline. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Hurricane Irma's prolonged interaction with Cuba diminished its strength to Category 3.
Irma is forecast to increase in strength as it crosses the FL Straits. The Florida Keys experienced strong outer bands while Irma grazed the N Cuba coastline.

Hurricane Irma Live Thread I
Hurricane Irma Live Thread II
It’s called a hurricane hole and it’s likely the safest place to put his boat. The trees provide a wind break. I don’t doubt there are structures on Key West built to withstand a hurricane, it is after all a very hurricane prone place. Would I have stayed myself? Doubtful. He sounds depressed, but he’ll likely be OK. His choice, either way.
Energy comes from water vapor condensing to liquid.
More, faster, equals stronger.
The diurnal heat cycle both aids and impedes condensation.
Both curves change with sun angle, and the full weight of the storm takes time to react.
Studies have shown that hurricane intensity does not vary much from day to night, the reason being that ocean temperatures do not change much from day to night and that is the main source of the energy of these storms.
If anything there is a tendency for hurricanes to intensify at night because of long lag time between daytime heating of cloud tops and convection. Tonight seems to be one occasion where a hurricane will strengthen overnight. But this is more due to location than anything to do with time of day (as Irma moves more out over open water and away from the disruptive influence of Cuba).
Sorry, ‘Hurricanes diurnal’ Typo.
:-)
Yes, quite interesting storm behavior.
Are you kidding me? You had it moving into the Gulf with your vanity. What you just linked to said St. Pete instead of Tampa. Please, just go away.
You’ve been very involved in this thread nonstop for how long? You know, the storm will still be bad if you get a few hours sleep. You’re beyond cranky, being very ugly to people. Maybe you should consider it.
Meanwhile, I was contacted to work at a special needs shelter because there is dire need for nurses to assist the displaced senior population in Florida. I will volunteer after the storm, after I am able to relocate my mother, after ensuring her home is secure, and while cleaning up and repairing the damage.
Oh--and between putting up the hurricane screens and preparing my house for this deadly storm, I made time to keep these threads updated. Imagine that. I also work full time. As the old saying goes--if you need something done, find the busiest person. They will get it done.
I am appalled at the petty people here who are more obsessed about the Hemingway cats and that Disney may be closed for a week while a substantial number of us are in survival mode working to protect lives and property of our families and community.
Think about it--and then return to your regularly scheduled soap opera programming.
Last time we had a Cat5 this close to our sensors, Vista was running on Core Duos.
With ya NN. I do worry about the cats, but I’m with ya.
My gawd, how dishonest can you be? The story you linked to mentions conditions tonight. Your vanity was two days ago.
With that voice of reason, I will retire from the scene. Thanks for your awesome service to others.
Best wishes and prayers that this beast goes more westward and spares you and yours.
Quit drinking. You turn into a jackass. Free advice. Some people do well, others dont. You are in the others category.
That is a very good link to information about this storm.
I can tell all that there is people on this thread that I have argued and actually got pissed at over the last 15 years.
Now isn’t the time. We have 1,000,000 people on the move for no reason and another 1,000,000 people on the move that is screwed.
Thanks very much NHC.
As db said, it varies. Harvey’s rains tended to be worse at night.

No, I have a very sore spot about posters who make uninformed vanity posts about hurricane tracks. I put in a lot of effort to provide timely, factual information on hurricanes. The poster in question has slithered around repeatedly in avoiding a mea culpa. Which is typical for folks who make stupid hurricane predictions.
Lay off that one. Outstanding Coverage.
