Hurricane Irma Live Thread
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

While thoughts and prayers are with our Texas FRiends and neighbors, we are at the peak of the Atlantic Tropical Storm season. Hurricane Irma continues its trek from Cape Verde across the pond and toward the Hebert Box (see below). People with interests in the Southeastern U.S. and Gulf of Mexico should be alert to the forecast path updates for this powerful storm. It is important to note that the average NHC track errors are about 175 and 225 statute miles at days 4 and 5, respectively.

Hurricane Irma originally had a small wind field. In the past 24 hours, however, the wind field has expanded with hurriance force winds up to 40 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds up to 140 miles from the storm center.

FL Governor Rick Scott reminds Floridians: Families should take time today to make sure you have a disaster plan and fully-stocked Disaster Supply Kit. Florida residents from West Palm Beach to Tampa Bay are heeding the alert. Store shelves are emptying of bottled water.

I have a feeling that a hurricane devastated Miami will be like NO times 10.

But they had OAN there. I watched it as much as I could. I wish my cable network would get it. I thought it was a great network.

So did I. I hadn't realized how irritated I was by the Democrats Fox News puts on to make sure they don't have more than 50% conservative news. OAN is openly and unapologetically conservative, and I find it so refreshing. Thanks to FReeper (I'm sorry I've forgotten his/her name) who recommended it on a thread some weeks ago!

That may be the only hope.

There's more hope than that. The land interaction will definitely weaken the storm, starting now. The biggest question is how close to Cuba it will get, for how long.

There are quarried coquina stone structures built on high ground on numerous islands down there that have endured. I’d hope there were storm shutters though, otherwise you’d potentially be looking at a sort of wind tunnel effect.

Gasp—Publix has turned off their online ordering for deli items across most of Florida “so that we may focus on the primary needs of our customers.”

Left Charlotte Harbor 0440 - had very pleasant ride up I-75 to central GA. Did not seem to be unusual traffic.

Just got home from a 12 hour day! Whew. Stress level max, folks keep thinking of Harvey...very tough convincing some that Irma is not Harvey.

I’m trying to catch up...I read one death on Barbuda? Hard to believe if most houses are gone, unless they all went to a hard-core shelter...

The big issue is most of those Art Deco buildings were built between 1923 and 1943 and nobody knows how well they can stay together in a Category 4 hurricane, let alone a Category 5, from a combination of very high wind, very heavy rain and especially the expected storm surge. Yikes.

Do you mean that it will come inland somewhere around there?

How far inland will the effects be in VA if it crawls along the eastern sea board?

And new construction to replace the old will be to the post-Andrew standard. Very expensive. No more slab-on-grade homes in flood plains.

It looks like Irma’s eye came no closer than about 25 miles to Puerto Rico.

Barbuda’s PM was on the other island. He got back there and reported one death with 90% of housing destroyed.

Population (I read) was 300. Police Station roof came off and police went to fire station to survive. Obviously there were some shelter buildings that provided shelter for the small population.

“In short, if South Beach suffers very heavy damage the economic hit to the Miami area could last for a decade or more as the Miami Beach area is slowly rebuilt—if at all. “

Could knock South Beach back to where it was 40 years ago.
