Frustration Mounts Over Premiums for Individual Health Plans
KOB4 ^ | September 03, 2017 | RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR

Millions of people who buy individual health insurance policies and get no financial help from the Affordable Care Act are bracing for another year of double-digit premium increases, and their frustration is boiling over.

Some are expecting premiums for 2018 to rival a mortgage payment.

What they pay is tied to the price of coverage on the health insurance markets created by the Obama-era law, but these consumers get no protection from the law's tax credits, which cushion against rising premiums. Instead they pay full freight and bear the brunt of market problems such as high costs and diminished competition.

Those that thought private polices were not going to be affected by Obamacare, weren’t paying attention.

I just got my increase notification. Effective 10-1. I will never vote for a republican at the federal level again.

I would imagine group insurance is pretty pricy as well

There may actually be an upside to this. As painful as it is and is going to be, hopefully it will condition the public so the next time some Democrat promises low-cost government health care, he will be booed off the stage and chased out of the building. For say the next 50-75 years.

Mine already easily resembles a mortgage payment.
Maybe next year it will resemble a mortgage payment + a summer house?

It’s nice that you are optimistic, but I think you are being naive. I don’t even know if 50% would choose to end ACA today, if they could.

I am on group insurance. The premiums have gone up 20% in the last 8 years, but the caps have doubled.

I don't think it's anything like a mortgage payment. You get something for a mortgage payment.

It would be like a mortgage payment if, if a mortgage helped pay for your house above a huge deductible.

I will never vote for a republican at the federal level again.

That means you won't vote for anyone? The Dems created the Obamacare problem; the Repubs failed to repeal it. We just need to clean the whole damn swamp in Wash D.C., without killing the nation. Which means at least voting for President Trump in 2020.

For most of my young life I just kind of stumbled along, not really PLANNING my next step. But I am thanking Heaven Above these days that I was smart (rebellious, actually) enough to go into the military after high school graduation.

I am so HAPPY to have VA healthcare as a Veteran, I can’t even begin to tell you. My local VA Hospital ROCKS - professional, caring, and we Lady Vets have our OWN clinics and wellness classes, nutritional counseling, mental health care, etc. It’s truly amazing.

Yes, I know it’s not bullet-proof and could be gone tomorrow, and YES, I wait at the BACK of the line while those MORE deserving of me get care, but day-um, in my case it’s ONE THING I haven’t minded spending my Tax Dollars on all these years.

Libraries, too. I don’t b*tch about them, either. ;)

I can’t even IMAGINE how some families are managing these HITS to their budgets. It’s a Government-Induced NIGHTMARE for so many.

And remember: this was ALL by design. Democrats need to CHOKE on this...and as far as I can see, so far, they are!

I expect my insurance to go up around $250 for 2018, putting it at nearly $800 per month. I will be dropping health insurance if it does. It is just money p*ssed down the drain, since my deductible is $6,500.

I understand how you feel. Until this past election, Wisconsin (where I live) was pretty blue. Blech!

But, PLEASE! Hold your nose and vote Republican for President. And work to PRIMARY any RINOs in your district.

THAT goes SO much further than sitting it out. :)

The Republicans, including Trump, want ACA just as much as the Democrats. NONE of them have lifted a finger to do anything about it.

I agree with you. I wish POTUS would just reverse every single regulation that has been enacted to make Obamacare “work”. The legislation by itself will not work Obamacare. It requires the bureaucratic regulations. POTUS can break and end this thing tomorrow. Then it would be up to congress to write specific legislation, order him to enforce their shell of a law... or repeal the thing.
