At least one sports television network president believes that national anthem protests last season were a factor in the decline of NFL ratings.
On Wednesday during its annual NFL Media Day in New York City, CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus said research his network did internally indicated that the protests played some kind of role in declining average viewers. He was emphatic, however, that it was merely a factor and not the cause. The average television viewership for the 2016 NFL season dropped roughly 8% last year from 2015.
We did research and it was relatively proprietary research, to be honest with you, McManus said. But I think if you look at some of the reasons why NFL viewership was down last year, that is a reason thats mentioned by a fair amount of viewers. It is something they dont find attractive or they find dont compelling in coverage of the football game. How big a factor it was? I dont really know. But it was one of the factors that I think perhaps led to the slight decrease in ratings last year.

Earlier in the week, Mike Mulvihill, the executive vice president of research, league operations and strategy for Fox Sports, emphatically told Sports Business Daily media reporter John Ourand that any NFL viewer backlash to Kaepernick was not a factor in the NFL declines ...

Part of that is letting supposedly mature men who make millions of dollars to play a game set the tone. What arrogance to let those elitist know-it-alls superimpose their views in place of those of a majority of NFL fans. What appalled me is that with this the NFL did not control the players, and made no attempt to do so.
I used to watch 3 games on Sunday (flipping between a couple on Direct TV), Sunday night, Monday night, & Thurs. night.
Now, the only one I’ll watch is the Cowboys. Don’t do math well, but that is way more than 8% in my house. 400%??
Well.....duhhhhhh
Fifty year fan, went cold turkey when the league did nothing.
They obviously don’t want to be this nation’s football league.
No kidding, who would have thought....
Me too! :-)
Now, the only one Ill watch is the Cowboys. Dont do math well, but that is way more than 8% in my house. 400%??
It does affect all the items you mention PLUS all the merchandise. I’ll not buy any NFL style merchandise for the handful of men I get birthday and Christmas gifts, not anymore. Bought none last year.
So even those of us who never watched NFL particularly are boycotting in that sense.
Aren’t there still other players, doing the same thing?
Same here, haven’t watched a single game since they started to ignore “We, The People”. I refuse to watch their foolishness, childish protests, the so-called “games” they play while being paid millions, nor will I support their sponsors. Until when/if the NFL decides to take a firm stand against their “protesting crap”, the TV & Radio will remain silent from any/all football games.
It would be cool if an alternative league was started. The American Football League or whatever. I don’t know if it would fly.
Respectful behavior on the field required. Off the field and on his own time, Colin can say or do what he wants. It would not affect my support. I wouldn’t be buying “his” jerseys or whatever, but I could still enjoy the sport.
But to have to watch him insult me, this nation, our military, our war dead, our history, our future, our wounded, with his crap - I won’t do it.
“...it was merely a factor and not the cause. ..”
What is the difference between a factor and cause??
Our family won’t be watching the NFL games either. We’re sticking to college football.
I think they should take “professional” out of the title of all of those ‘sports’.
I’ll start watching again:
When they spend less time replaying the post-play “celebrations” then the actual play
When they cut out the politics, grandstanding, etc.
When they stop pandering to get more women, millenials, whatever to watch
When the half-time shows stop insulting us
When they stop babying the QB
When they start issuing suspensions instead of paltry fines
When oh heck with it
When we hear Jerry Jones speak out, we will know we are hitting their Ad income.
It will not be long.
As a Redskins man since 1972 (and you gotta admire Snyder’s determination to stick with the name) I sorta want to see the Cowboys dropped into an active volcano, but...
Did you see what Prescott said about the flag and the nat. anthem?
Now I’m conflicted, big time.
Surely you pity me?
My team stands for the anthem, honors veterans and gives money to charities. I’m not about to boycott them because of the jackass Kapernick. I support Green Bay 100% and will watch them this year.
It’s amazing how many people deny this.
