At least one sports television network president believes that national anthem protests last season were a factor in the decline of NFL ratings.
On Wednesday during its annual NFL Media Day in New York City, CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus said research his network did internally indicated that the protests played some kind of role in declining average viewers. He was emphatic, however, that it was merely a factor and not the cause. The average television viewership for the 2016 NFL season dropped roughly 8% last year from 2015.
We did research and it was relatively proprietary research, to be honest with you, McManus said. But I think if you look at some of the reasons why NFL viewership was down last year, that is a reason thats mentioned by a fair amount of viewers. It is something they dont find attractive or they find dont compelling in coverage of the football game. How big a factor it was? I dont really know. But it was one of the factors that I think perhaps led to the slight decrease in ratings last year.

Earlier in the week, Mike Mulvihill, the executive vice president of research, league operations and strategy for Fox Sports, emphatically told Sports Business Daily media reporter John Ourand that any NFL viewer backlash to Kaepernick was not a factor in the NFL declines ...

This is only a surprise to morons.
I will not watch again this year.
Can we work on that?
Kraft’s stooge Roger Goodell has been ruining the NFL for 10 years.
I think most people already know, they just don’t want to admit it publicly.
Kaepernick is 100% the reason why I didn’t watch a single play last year. Except for the few plays I was unpleasantly exposed to at my brother’s house on Thanksgiving.
And I won’t be watching this year either. Not a single play. For the same reason.
To Hollywood types “shut up and act”. NFL Players “Shut up and play” and to recording artists “Shut up and sing”
Your sole purpose in life is to entertain. PERIOD. We work hard, we deal with problems every single day, when you are on we just want to be entertained.
I am going to watch m’Cowboys with Star-Spangled delight.
...I will not watch again this year..
Me too.

An 8% decrease is not a 'slight' decrease in a business that had experienced many years of annual growth and had expected the same for 2015. It's significant, and if it continues it will become a serious problem.
Seems to me that fans (vast majority being white) shouldn’t have any issue with being told, over and over again, that they’re RACIST assholes...at least that’s what the owners apparently thought, anyway.
And to some agree, it’s hard to blame the owners - after all the NeverTrumpers think the same of us (i.e., the base), and yet we keep voting for them, even to the point of returning McCain to the Senate.
What excuse will the NFL use to explain this seasons drop in ratings too?
Last year they blamed it on elections, not the Anti-American.
At least as far as I’m concerned, professional sports in general is something I can take or leave.
I used to be a huge baseball fan, back in the day. I stopped going to baseball games, or even watching or listening to the games on a regular basis after the last strike.
After reading about these “protests,” combined with all the hype over the “Redskins,” I had enough. I can find something else to do during the games. I’m done with professional sports. I might catch a game now or then, as part of a social event, but as I said before, I can take it or leave it.

They’re still in denial.
Wow. Next, they will discover that water is wet. Film at 11.
But, but, can there still be huge salaries for sports broadcasters, players, coaches, commissioners?
If they used Republican pollsters, the answer would have been people using the Internet...as if the Internet popped up into existence just when Conlin’s knee dropped. LOL
can they say duh?
