this year BBC Culture decided to get serious about comedy. We asked 253 film critics 118 women and 135 men from 52 countries and six continents a simple: What do you think are the 10 best comedies of all time? Films from any country made since cinema was invented were eligible, and BBC Culture did nothing to define in advance what a comedy is; we left that to each of the critics to decide. As always, we urged the experts to go with their heart and pick personal favourites, films that are part of their lives, not just the ones that meet some ideal of greatness.

How can one even begin to address a list like this?
I have to admit I looked for and saw my favorites, including 4 from Mel Brooks (I think “Spaceballs” should also have made the list but I can understand why not).
The General (hilarious) was there, as were Team America, Airplane, Ghostbusters, Born Yesterday and Office Space.
I am good with it.
“It’s a Gift” starring W. C. Fields in 1934.

The critics did not like "Overboard" but everyone else did.
>>Young Frankenstein<<
#22
I was glad to see “Top Secret!” on the list.
Val Kilmer will always be Nick Rivers to me.
Where’s ‘Hollywood Knights’?
“A Shot in the Dark” and “The Pink Panther Strikes Again” are missing.
I would have included “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and “Return of the Pink Panther.”
Winner!
And Inconvenient-Sequel-Whatever-It-Was as runner-up
“Planes, Trains & Automobiles”
“Stir Crazy”
Big ol’ Plus 1 on that.
I understand Cagney hated making that movie, the fast pace was too much to handle.
But he did great!
Yes, “My Cousin Vinnie,” too. The only law movie worth watching.
If only Phlap had posted correctly......
“The Gods Must Be Crazy” is missing.
“Schlemmer, you’re back in the SS, ‘Small Salary’”....LOL! That line cracks me up every time.
As much as I do not care for Streisand, What’s Up Doc is hilarious.
I hate Woody Allen. Boring. Never mind how ugly and liberal he is.

He thinks he’s a comedic genius.
Nope. He’s boring and dull.
Only one Keaton out of 100? Blasphemy! I would put everything Keaton did in the 1920s at the very top Chaplin to follow and then a handful of the pix below. The list is very uneven. It looks more like some persons dvd collection.
I would have included “Galaxy Quest”.
I would have also included “Clean Slate”. It was the only work by Dana Carvey that I liked. The music was great.
No “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels??”
