HOUSTON – The City of Houston is asking the state for $43 million to help with flood relief projects along Brays Bayou.

The announcement comes after the city experienced flooding last week causing bayous to rise out of their banks.

Some residents say their homes have taken on water several times in the last two years.

“We are here to announce that relief is certainly on the way,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “My hope is that, after this is completed, you will no longer have to rush to get furniture and carpet off the floors when heavy rain is forecast. Once the work is finished here, we will move to other areas of Houston that have suffered.”

Probably went to campaign coffers of Sheila Jackson-Lee....who, by the way, should be forced to change her racist name!

Yes. It’s real. Owner used family member in Florida to tweet it out so they could be rescued. Many have been hospitalized.

I make no comment on the subject from the title of the post.

However, on the situation the Hurricane created, I just don’t see the news of the calamity representing the high pitch of “unprecedented” that has been given to the weather reports about the storm.

To me, so far, there is a disconnect between the reported severity of the storm and the actual calamity it is creating.

I usually stand with you guys, but you have no idea what this part of Texas is going through. I am surprised, though, that the mayor of Houston is already asking for funds because the worse part of the storm hasn’t even hit yet. They are expecting over 52” of rain over the next few days. I don’t think houses on stilts would help that much. We have many, many people in South Texas in terrible situations and don’t need smart @ss remarks from folks like you. We would appreciate prayers though.

Well, seems flood insurance in a 100-year zone is about 1% of the price, annually.
Steep, but not prohibitive.

Ask Sheila Jackson Lee what happened to the money.

They’ve known since the first campfire was built along the bayou that it floods. Houston does not have zoning laws. Yeah, for real. They can build pretty much what they want wherever they want. This is the result.

I saw that pic earlier and it brought tears to my eyes. I hope they all got hot showers and warm beds.

Cognitive dissonance on the part of the media. I see from your profile you are from New Jersey so I’m sure what is unfolding here is simply a side news item. It doesn’t surprise me that the NE wouldn’t give much time to those of us in Houston. It’s not in your backyard. An area larger than the size of Connecticut (initially I thought Rhode Island) with 7 million people is underwater.. No Hyperbole. If this were happening in the Boswash Corridor—wall to wall news, I’m sure. https://www.harriscountyfws.org

I lived in Houston for awhile so I am familiar with its spread out size, it’s land, its often clay like soil (absorbs a ton of water, but does not absorb water fast), its low lying areas and its waterways. So I get the size of the area Harvey has hit.

But as much of the “weather” aspect of the event is, the human calamity has not seen like Katrina - nearly 2,000 died. That’s all I am saying.

Care? I have relatives in Texas. Fortunately they are in Abiline area and San Antonio, but they have friends and extended relatives in Houston, whom we have all called out to.

My ONLY point is, to me, the “weather” aspect of the calamity seems less than the human aspect. That is not without care and concern for the human costs. It’s just what seems to me to be difference in how the weather damage of Harvey is being reported, versus just how bad things are.

Katrina was much worse, in human terms. but as bad as Katrina was I don’t think it, as a weather event, was promoted as “unprecedented”.

Didn’t notice the date. As you can see, I’m a little short tempered because of the situation. Sorry for the sharp reply.

Find out the highest flood stage, add 5’ to it, and make that your mandatory new finished floor elevation.

Wow...the lower overpass is completely under water...

That’s got to be at least 15 ft of water

It’s supposed to fill with water like that, to just below the lower bridge. The main bayou is about 5 feet above flood stage so it covered the lower bridge. That’s not really a failure.

“We have many, many people in South Texas in terrible situations and don’t need smart @ss remarks from folks like you. We would appreciate prayers though.”

My remarks were directed toward the a$$hole that’s the Mayor of Houston, not the people. You’re right, this isn’t the proper time to have a discussion about the continuing need for aid on the Gulf Coast. No one gains from watching people suffer from something that, at the moment, over which they have no control.
But when things return to a semblance of normal, there needs to be a hard discussion about the efficacy of living where your home is not in a defensible place, then having to have the rest of the country bail you out for your poor decision. As for an idea of what The Gulf Coast is going through, unfortunately, we are getting it in “living color” and it IS a major disaster.
