Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport TX about 10:00PM CDT Friday night. Top sustained winds were 130mph. Rockport High School sustained heavy damage when a portion of the roof collapsed. A senior housing complex collapsed. The Rockport courthouse sustained major damage with a cargo trailer halfway in the building. Multiple tornadoes reported in the Houston/Galveston areas. There are reports of scattered structural fires and a shooting was reported in Corpus Christi. Residents along the San Bernard River were advised to evacuate and most TX Gulf coast counties are under flash flood watches.
Many locations are under a boil-water notice. Power outages are widespread. President Donald Trump promptly granted a Disaster Declaration to Texas Governor Greg Abbotts request. More than 700 members of the Texas Army and Air National Guards, Texas State Guard and the Texas Military Department have been activated and are positioning themselves throughout the state ahead of Hurricane Harvey and its anticipated landfall later this week. Ahead of the storm, FEMA sent supplies from its warehouse in Fort Worth to a staging point at Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio.

Thread I: Potentially Catastrophic Hurricane Harvey Approaches Texas Gulf Coast
It’s a Boar.My husband hunted them.
If it’s the same presser I heard, I have no corrections, but did I hear correctly that the flow over the 1st auxiliary spillway is only 100 cfs? I thought, surely I did not hear that right, but, I think it was said twice.* It seems like the proverbial drop in the bucket, although if levels rise, it would increase, all dependent on inflow.
*Granted, I had a couple distractions, too.

something going on at a chemical plant in Crosby...chemicals need to stay cool or risk explosion..no power....back up gen sets flooded
Explosion risk forces Arkema to evacuate Texas chemical plant
The company said some refrigeration of back-up containers has been compromised because of high-water levels and the company is monitoring temperature levels remotely.
While we do not believe there is any imminent danger, the potential for a chemical reaction leading to a fire and/or explosion within the site confines is real, the company said.
Arkema is working with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the state of Texas to set up a command post near the site.
U.S. Representative Ted Poe, a Texas Republican, wrote on Twitter that the Crosby plant is in danger of fire/explosion. The local area is being evacuated. Stay out of area.

At age 60 with 30 years, clearly could be retired right now...
God bless him.
Saw boats traveling south and RVs traveling north when I was on 281 in Blanco Co., TX this am.
Inks Lake State Park, a couple hours north of Austin, has 50 evacuation families camping. Thanks to Gov. Abbott for waiving all state park fees.
And because Houston has no zoning laws. Build whatever you want in the flood zone.
Per FNC: Estimates are that up to 80% of people affected in Houston do not have flood insurance.

Bastardi predicted the storm surge like issues in the bay.
People can’t afford flood insurance. Many will just walk away.
Don’t know about property taxes there, but my Texas county raises them 10% every year. The appraisal is ridiculous. Money grubbers. After property taxes rob us of three and a half months of take home pay, there isn’t much left.

On one thing we can rest assured—there will never be another Hurricane Harvey. The name will surely be retired to the history books.
And another estimate I heard is that there could be upwards of 450,000 insurance claims as a result of the storm (I believe the number includes affected areas outside Houston).
On the bright side, with all the cars flooded, traffic should be light when the roads clear.
As reported elsewhere in the thread, there is dry air flowing in from the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma, Kansas, and I guess New Mexico. Local Weatherman had map showing the 18,000 foot flow of dry air coming in...
KHOU says sun poking out in spots.
Many creek and bayou levels falling. That’s a variable thing depending on location. Rivers won’t crest until Fri/Sat in the area.
Sounds like a brief respite and a window of opportunity to get people and animals to a better, safer place before the rivers crest. When that happens, it’s going to start all over again but worse because of contamination and dead animals, the stench will be sickening. Three days. Highest ground accessible if they can’t get completely out, hopefully multistory structure that is not in a known floodplain.
