A Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS John S. McCain, collided with a commercial vessel east of Singapore early Monday morning local time, the Navy said.
There were 10 sailors missing and five injured, the Navy said.
The collision with the merchant ship Alnic MC occurred east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore at 6:24 a.m. Japan Standard Time, as the McCain was on its way for a routine port visit in Singapore, the Navy said.

The collision avoidance code is an officer of the deck who is supposed to order courses and speeds to steer the ship safely away from lumbering big-ass merchant vessels. On a ship there is no auto-pilot rigged to the radar.

When one ship runs into another, the bow, the front of the ship, is damaged.
If a ship is damaged on the side, then it has been run into.

Did you see the CO and EO Resumes?
When I was in, a ship like this would have a very seasoned CO and EO, they would be at least 45 years old and have had several commands under their belt.
Not enough.
Apparently the Peter Principle has been involved for some years in the promotion of Navy officers, resulting in a portion of current officers whom the Admirals have approved the promotion of though such officers have not deserved those promotions, rising instead to their level of incompetence.
The whole structure needs a command shakeup.
I would be reviewing the records of the officers involved and looking at who has been recommending their promotions and promoting them.
Did you see the resumes of the officers.
