Trump dictated son’s misleading statement on meeting with Russian lawyer
Washington Post ^ | 7/31/17 | Ashley Parker, Carol D. Leonnig, Philip Rucker and Tom Hamburger

On the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Germany last month, President Trump’s advisers discussed how to respond to a new revelation that Trump’s oldest son had met with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 campaign — a disclosure the advisers knew carried political and potentially legal peril.

The strategy, the advisers agreed, should be for Donald Trump Jr. to release a statement to get ahead of the story. They wanted to be truthful, so their account couldn’t be repudiated later if the full details emerged.

But within hours, at the president’s direction, the plan changed.

Flying home from Germany on July 8 aboard Air Force One, Trump personally dictated a statement in which Trump Jr. said that he and the Russian lawyer had “primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children” when they met in June 2016, according to multiple people with knowledge of the deliberations. The statement, issued to the New York Times as it prepared an article, emphasized that the subject of the meeting was “not a campaign issue at the time.”

The claims were later shown to be misleading.

>> I simply stated the VERIFIED FACT that the original statement about the meeting was false <<

Yes, but simply by making that observation, you are hinting that the POTUS is covering something up — and as I understand such matters, you’re really not supposed to make such nefarious hints around here. FR is a pro-Trump site, and we don’t want even the slightest hint or suggestion that he might have made a mistake or had done something wrong.

sounds like something a former Chief of Staff would know

And might release if they had an axe to grind.

These shifting statements came from Donald Trump Jr. not the president.

The anonymous sources indicate otherwise, but that is hardly proof of anything, as others have pointed out.

And if we can’t stick to facts, then how are we any better than the peddlers of fake news?

The buried lead:

---

Although misleading the public or the news media is not a crime, advisers to Trump and his family told The Washington Post that they fear any indication that Trump was seeking to hide information about contacts between his campaign and Russians almost inevitably would draw additional scrutiny from Mueller.

Trump, they say, is increasingly acting as his own lawyer, strategist and publicist, often disregarding the recommendations of the professionals he has hired. “He refuses to sit still,” the presidential adviser said. “He doesn’t think he’s in any legal jeopardy, so he really views this as a political problem he is going to solve by himself.”

Trump has said that the Russia investigation is “the greatest witch hunt in political history,” calling it an elaborate hoax created by Democrats to explain why Clinton lost an election she should have won.

Because Trump believes he is innocent, some advisers explained, he therefore does not think he is at any legal risk for a coverup. In his mind, they said, there is nothing to conceal.

There were no “shifting statements”, just additional details. Trump, Jr. accurately said what was relevant about the meeting in his original statement. The press then started focusing on other details about the meeting, which he addressed as they came up. The press has been microanalyzing the meeting and then breathlessly reporting each new detail that emerges as if it were a “shifting statement”. For instance, they made a federal case over how many people attended the meeting—as if a CEO’s main takeaway from a meeting is how many heads were at the table. No new details that have emerged have contradicted anything Trump, Jr. said in any of his statements.

From an intervkew with the President’s attorney, Jay Sekulow, on July 12:

“That statement — by the way, I wasn’t involved in the statement drafting at all, nor was the president. I’m assuming that was between Mr. Donald Trump Jr., between Don Jr. and his lawyer. I’m sure his lawyer was involved, that’s how you do it. You know that. So to put this on the president I think is just absolutely incorrect.”

I don’t know why Drudge promotes this drivel, and I don’t know how anyone here can believe this crap after The Washington Post has been caught, repeatedly falsifying stories with their “anonymous sources.”

They can literally create any narrative they want to spin with unverifiable “sources” and even conservatives will believe it as gospel.

I think I just answered the question as to why Drudge is promoting this crap.

Has any of them asked Debbie What’s-her-Name’ of the DNC, why she hired on a Paki IT spy team to service her .... over a decade + ago???

See, this is why I am having a hard time with “politics” these days. The gullible half of the country is more concerned with this NOTHING meeting and who chose what to say about it than the Huge Scandal Of Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the blackmail / hushpay Pakistani IT team.

It’s almost too frustrating to go on breathing! We are trapped in bizarro world.

Who is leaking these very private discussions?

How many people were involved in this conversation?

Seems like it should be rather easy to find the snitch and fire his ass.

The leaks are back. Of course, the guy who was hired to find the leakers was fired. The leakers seem terrified of Kelly.
