Norfolk, Va. — The Navy’s search for a possible diver who was trespassing in the waters surrounding the piers at Naval Station, Norfolk, will likely continue for some time, a Navy official said.
“They are still searching for the possible diver,” said Kelly Wirfel, spokeswoman for Naval Station Norfolk in an email around 2:30 p.m. Monday.
“It will most likely take some time until they can clear the entire area,” Wirfel said.
Norfolk’s piers and ships were put on lock down Monday morning after reports of a possible diver in the water.
“At 9 a.m. this morning a shipboard watch stander reported a possible diver in the water,” said Kelly Wirfel, spokeswoman for Naval Station Norfolk. “That sighting was confirmed by multiple other watch standers and the situation is still under investigation.”
Wirfel said the Navy Criminal Investigation Service, Navy explosive ordnance disposal, Naval Station Norfolk base security and fire departments are still on scene investigating.
“All piers remain on lockdown and ships are in a security alert status,” she said.
The base itself is not locked down, only the piers, she said. It remains unclear when the lockdown will be lifted.

I liked Ronald Reagan. Best POTUS in modern times. He allowed one huge mistake to happen. The construction of the third carrier pier at N.O.B. taking it from a three to a five carrier berth base. Very bad idea. No justification was worth the risk. Add that to NNSY upstream a few miles and NNSBDD across the river and you have too many eggs in one place. Our entire carrier fleet can be in Norfolk. I’m surprised some idiot hasn’t ordered it for a photo OP like the four in numerical order picture.

My son is aboard one of the ships. Finally secured lockdown about two hours ago, then all the sailors from all the ships got to leave for the day, creating major traffic jam.
This reminds me of an old TV spy show from back around 1960 in which a diver near a US ship is spotted when he surfaces as his scuba malfunctioned. Story is he was a Brit diver sent to “check out” some new equipment on the US ship they were not informed about.
Because the diver had been spotted, he is sent to a far away place, the Falkland Islands.
They see a diver where a diver shouldn’t be and they “observe”? Why weren’t there boats, or other options, in the water immediately? Troubling on two fronts: possible terror attack attempt and lack of response on the Navy’s part.
