WASHINGTON — The Russian lawyer who met with the Trump team after a promise of compromising material on Hillary Clinton was accompanied by a Russian-American lobbyist — a former Soviet counter intelligence officer who is suspected by some U.S. officials of having ongoing ties to Russian intelligence, NBC News has learned.
NBC News is not naming the lobbyist, who denies any current ties to Russian spy agencies. He accompanied the lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, to the June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower attended by Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort.
The Russian-born American lobbyist served in the Soviet military and emigrated to the U.S., where he holds dual citizenship.
Veselnitskaya acknowledged to NBC News that she was accompanied by at least one other man, though she declined to identify him.
The presence at the meeting of a Russian-American with suspected intelligence ties is likely to be of interest to special counsel Robert Mueller and the House and Senate panels investigating the Russian election interference campaign.
Contacted by NBC News, representatives for Kushner and Manafort declined to comment. A lawyer for Trump Jr. did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
Veselnitskaya, in an exclusive interview with NBC News, denied having any connection to the Kremlin and insisted the meeting was to discuss sanctions, not the presidential campaign.

In addition, Veselnitskaya worked with Rinat Akhmetshin, founder of the Human Rights Accountability Global Initiative Foundation, a man who has admitted to previously working as a “Soviet counterintelligence officer,” Erickson writes.
Of Akhmetshin, Grassley said:
In fact, it has been reported that he worked for the GRU and allegedly specializes in “active measures campaigns,” i.e., subversive political influence operations often involving disinformation and propaganda. According to press accounts, Mr. Akhmetshin “is known in foreign policy circles as a key pro-Russian operator,” and Radio Free Europe described him as a “Russian ‘gun-for-hire’ [who] lurks in the shadows of Washington’s lobbying world.” He was even accused in a lawsuit of organizing a scheme to hack the computers of one his client’s adversaries.
Akhmetshin’s group happened to have retained Veselnitskaya as an attorney.
Most of this seems to point directly at FUSION, the president of which has refused to testify before Congress. Senator Grassly is said to have subpoenaed him

Except that Trump, Jr. told Hannity no one else was in the room. No one else means no one else doesn’t it. Whether an interpreter, domestic help, spy or whatever.
There is a very strong need by russia to remove this Act. It could be this was just a bait and switch meeting...dangle emails but get in to talk about Act..even perhaps hoping to get blackmail material

In the Hannity interview he says the Goldstone dude was there, too ... which is the first time I heard that Goldstone attended the meeting (in addition to just arranging it).

You are correct. Someone actually said on Twitter that Trump had a successful trip so something was bound to drop. Every. Single. Time.
Jr is getting screwed over here. Reports are he wanted to tell truth from beginning but WH strong armed into a cover story. A story that blew up.
Kushner threw him under bus.
Dont be surprised if Mother is working behind scenes to protect him.

Maybe. NBC said Don Jr.’s lawyer said there could have been a sixth person. I would assume that was the translator.
This Rinet guy was probably there. The one grassley thinks was a spy.
Why didn't he drop the dirt on Clinton? Oh. Right. Because the whole thing was a setup orchestrated by Baraq Ubama and Loretta Lynch.

I suspect some of these stories are promoted by the Trump people ... to capture public and media attention while controversial items are addressed in Washington with very little scrutiny.
For example ... the Senate confirmation hearing for Trump's new FBI director hardly got any notice at all the other day when this "Donald Trump Jr. bombshell" was all over the news. After all the drama with his predecessor James Comey, you'd think that should have been the subject of wall-to-wall media coverage. LOL.
And what happened at that meeting? That is what makes this whole thing a nothingburger. It’s getting kinda funny. :)
