A 16-year old boy was mauled and killed by a black bear Sunday while running a mountain race, Alaska State Troopers said.
The teenager, whose identity has not been released, was a participant in the juniors division of the Robert Spurr Memorial Hill Climb race between Anchorage and Girdwood, the Alaska Dispatch News reported.
Brad Precosky, the races director, said the runner had apparently made it to the halfway point turnaround on Bird Ridge Trail when he texted a family member that he was being chased by a bear. The family member alerted Precosky about the text and a search was immediately executed.

Texting while being chased by a bear. I’m sorry that this boy died but this is just bizarre.

“Yep. When you have run, run, dont text.”
Black bears run much faster than humans. His chance of outrunning one was near zero.

“It was only a 3 mile run. The report says awards were already being handed out. So, did he decide to run by himself after everyone was finished or what?”
I read somewhere that he got lost on the trail.

I'm in Fairbanks this morning, we just finished driving the Alaska highway last night. Yesterday in Canada, we had just started an up hill climb from a lake valley where tent camping is prohibited this time of year due to bear activity.
We drove up on a momma grizzly eating grasses along the roadside while her 2 tiny cubs watched her. Knowing how dangerous the situation could be we took pictures from the car while momma relentlessly stuffed herself. A big semi flew by and scared one of the cubs so mom wandered back up a hill off the highway.
We drove on up and soon came up on 2 bicyclists who were struggling up the grade. They had to have ridden right by the bears, no way they could have gotten awY riding uphill on gear laden bikes. Crazy!

I read somewhere that he got lost on the trail. He wasn't lost since he was texting at the halfway turn around point. Most likely, the bear dragged his body off the trail.

A black bear? Must run up on a momma and her cub(s).The article said the bear was predatory. Not common in black bear but not unheard of, either. If a black bear turns predatory, it is totally capable of a lethal attack on a human.

Black bears run much faster than humans. His chance of outrunning one was near zero. He didn't have to outrun the bear, just outrun one other runner.
