Steve Scalise dragged himself into the ball field to get away, while shots going overhead from both sides.
Flake ran to Scalise to render aid.
Rand Paul was there. His account:
Rifle used. First shot nobody reacted, then 5-10 in a row.
He was at farthest spot. Stayed behind an oak tree. 50-60 shots from shooter. Capitol police returned fire with handguns. “Nobody would have survived without Capitol police...Would have been massacre without them.”
Both police, Scalise, two or three staffers were wounded. Capitol police officer (woman?) airlifted to hospital.

More than one weapon. Shooter had rifle and pistol. Was using pistol at the time the cops got him.

From disparate reports, maybe more than one, the person who asked "D or R" was reported to be wearing running suit. Shooter described as wearing jeans.
