Patrick Ford, who graduates from UC Berkeley today with an MBA, is a standout at the Haas School of Business. Berkeley News recently talked with Ford about the origin of his mission, Guy Talk and other manbassador activities at Berkeley-Haas and post-graduation plans.
What is a manbassador, and where did the name and idea come from?
Manbassador is a more memorable name for the universal term male ally. A male ally is a man who works to end gender discrimination by supporting and being an advocate for women.
I started noticing and caring about gender equity as an undergrad. Some female colleagues pointed out that I tended to dominate conversations and speak over them. I felt pretty defensive at first: Why do I have to change? Why cant they just be more like me? But I came to realize that my unconscious bias and actions can unintentionally disempower people, and that making space for other voices beyond my own results in better ideas and happier colleagues.
How do you account for the popularity of the group, with a third of the male MBA students signing on?
I dont think any men getting their MBAs at Berkeley believe sexism is acceptable. The learning edge for me and my fellow male classmates has to do with better understanding our own unconscious biases, and how those play out in personal and professional settings.
Theres a growing awareness of how significantly unconscious bias affects our behavior even men with good intentions can have a negative impact. Many men are drawn toward wanting to better support their female friends, girlfriends, wives and daughters when theyre no longer blind to how women often have to deal with unfair situations. They are looking for tools, and the aim of the manbassador program is to provide them.

Manbassador: Noun. Synonym for mangina.
Do these two fairies really think that women have no voice on college campuses?
I thought that modern women were strong and “in charge”, so why do they need male advocates?
Wouldn’t last a day in a real man’s job: Welder, Roughneck, Pipeliner, Electrician, etc......they couldn’t handle it. MBA? Phfffff...doesn’t mean shite....dime a dozen.
It is rather paternalistic and patronizing of them to assume that the "weaker sex" is in need of their divine protection. In reality, half the women on campus could probably whip their butts in a fair fight.
Looks like these two should get a room...or they’ve just left it.

There is nothing wrong with traditional gender roles. The university, it it were an open and fair place, would support traditional gender roles, also.
Sounds to me like the parents were right.
Just because something happens in slow motion doesn't mean it's not happening.
We all do silly things when young, but at least in my day we did not document being silly.
These boys are going to look back at these days and hope no body remembers.
Ten years from now, this guy will be on Dr. Phil trying to explain why he ran naked through a produce department holding a banana and screaming “I’m a man!”.
Forget where I read it in the past week, but someone presciently said “If you think the religious right was bad, wait until you meet the Post-religious right”.
This ain’t gonna be pretty.
Amazing how everybody else can see my unconscious biases and thinks I need to do something about them. I’ll get back to you as soon as you let me know how your unconscious biases affected your interpretation of my unconscious biases.
Funny...I thought these guys were going to promote MEN...the should really be called FEMbassadors...
Oh, and they’re missing their Pussy Hats
Yep. Talk softly and carry no stick. I notice this MBA student plans to eschew the dirty capitalist world and work in government or nonprofits.
Gamma males?
>>In reality, half the women on campus could probably whip their butts in a fair fight
But they’d rather have that big strong football player “whip” their butts.

Feminism started out for equal rights. Now it’s about female privilege.
