MARION, Ind. (WISH) – The grandmother of a young girl who was molested and impregnated in Marion says the man charged with the crime was someone they trusted.
34-year-old Nicholas Deon Thrash is facing 10 counts of child molestation.
“He’s not type of person that you’d think would do something like this,” said the grandmother.
She said she met Thrash multiple times.
“We invited him into our home. He helped my husband all he could,” said the grandmother.
Now Thrash is behind bars, and family says the young girl is 20 weeks pregnant.
“Now her whole life has changed. … She’s scared being this far along and having to carry this baby,” said the grandmother.
Family members are caring for the girl while her mother is in jail. They said it’s heartbreaking watching someone so young go through this.
“She came out and asked, ‘Can I get my Barbies?’ I said, ‘Of course you can.’ She is still a little girl that wants to play that has to grow up overnight,” said the grandmother.
It’s something that’s not easy for her to talk about, but she said she is hoping this will inspire other parents to talk with their children, possibly preventing something like this from happening to another child.
“Teach your kids to have enough trust in you to come to you and say ‘This is wrong, help,'” said the grandmother.
Sandy Runkle, director of Prevent Child Abuse Indiana, said having those conversations with your kids is important. She said parents should also be cautious of adults who want to spend too much alone time with a certain child.
Runkle said about 90 percent of the time the abuser is someone the child knows and trusts.
The grandmother said Thrash was someone they trusted.
“I hope he gets what’s coming to him. He’s got to pay for this,” said the grandmother.
The family is now asking for help getting maternity clothes for that young girl. They say she is a size small.
As soon as we learn more information about how you can help, we will post that here on our website. The family says they are not sure yet if they will give the baby up for adoption.

Doesn’t make sense from a science viewpoint for such an immature body to have to deliver a baby.
Plus the story is disgusting.

I hope the poor girl makes it Ok. Having a baby at that age is very risky.
At least her family is not traumatizing her further by killing the baby. They really are trying to do the right thing. That, I think, will really help her to get over this ordeal.
That sort of thing isn’t limited to that group.
We shouldn’t judge that part of it too harshly. We’ve got animals in our own group too.
Some of ours are same sex crimes also.
The guy is fairly decent looking. Seems he could find a woman more his age for a relationship.

We hear statements such as this sometimes. We hear how people are just so shocked that a certain someone could do such a thing.
It points up again, how frequently a molester/abuser is someone in the family, or in the family’s circle of friends/acquaintences/co-workers, as opposed to some complete stranger. This grandma, may have had in mind that some shady character hanging out behind some bushes was the biggest threat to her granddaughter. Sadly, it was someone they all trusted.
I hope they keep the baby in the family. I will grant it’s not always an easy decision when the girl in her late teens either. Ten? Whew, that causes the decisions to become harder exponentially.
They will do a c-section she will be fine but OMG how could this happen why didn’t the girl tell!!!

The fellow inmates in prison will remedy this situation in no time.
Some girls look mature at 10 or 11, neither is too young for menses. Poor kid.
May be TMI, but I was 11 and that was 47 years ago. They are starting younger now.
Never having been a girl I can't be sure but it's easy to see how the kid could have been scared out of her mind.Or totally clueless.

It's happened before. The youngest girl to be pregnant was a Peruvian girl of 8 years old back in the 1930s.
Well guess what, the virgin Mary wasn’t much older than that. Back in biblical days, much like Islamic days of today, a girl was considered wife material when reaching puberty.
The youngest I believe was eight.
Poor kid, mom's in jail, grandma is stupid (at best) and dad is not even mentioned.
