Global temperatures could rise more than 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2026 if the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation shifts into a positive phase.
The Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation, or IPO, is an ocean-atmosphere climate phenomenon that drives weather patterns and global temperatures. It's similar to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, but covers a large portion of the Pacific.
According to a new study by climate scientists at the University of Melbourne, a positive phase IPO would dramatically accelerate global warming.
The IPO has remained in a negative phase since 1999, but significant oceanic and atmospheric warming over the last three years suggests the phenomenon could be on the verge of a shift.
"Even if the IPO remains in a negative phase, our research shows we will still likely see global temperatures break through the 1.5 degrees Celsius guardrail by 2031," researcher Ben Henley said in a news release.
The results of the new study, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, suggests a slowdown in global warming over the last two decades could be explained by the IPO's current negative phase.
"Although the Earth has continued to warm during the temporary slowdown since around 2000, the reduced rate of warming in that period may have lulled us into a false sense of security," Henley said. "The positive phase of the IPO will likely correct this slowdown. If so, we can expect an acceleration in global warming in the coming decades."

Or they could go DOWN by that much or more. Or they could STAY THE SAME.
AGW is NOT SCIENCE based on the definition of science, scientific theories and the scientific method.
It has ZERO utility as there are no scientific data which can ONLY be explained by it.
This is a really important point that people need to take with them.
We (many on this board) hand the left a strong argument that AGW and Evolution are both equivalent and equally science. This is false. TToE has billions of data points and 200 years of study all which have created a Scientific Theory that cannot be explained by any other competing theory.
OTOH, Weather (for example) competes with AGW as an alternative to explain observed changes.
PLEASE — even if you don’t understand TToE (and I am not going to re-fight the CREVO wars here) STOP handing this argumentative tool to the Left. They have been successfully bashing us on the head with it for YEARS.
Most of these chicken little predictions are 10 to 15 years out and there’s never an apology or an acknowledgement when it doesn’t come to pass.
The global warming alarmists have zero credibility, just like the coming ice age alarmists in the 70s. And some of them are the same people. I guess there’s money to be made in junk science fear tactics.

It’s May 9, 2017, and for Ashvillle, North Carolina the climate scientists are predicting rain for Asheville on May 9, 2026.
There, I just said something as scientifically accurate as predicting average global “warming” by a certain degree Celsius by 2016.
