Supporters and opponents of removing New Orleans' Confederate monuments met Sunday afternoon (May 7) at Lee Circle, in a tense and angry confrontation that included some scuffles during a day of demonstrations.
Police quickly broke up a couple of fights, and the dueling protests appeared mostly peaceful. But heated words, slurs and profanities were exchanged, as demonstrators on opposite sides held Confederate flags and protest signs.
A march led by Take 'Em Down NOLA, which supports the removal of the Confederate monuments, brought hundreds of people from Congo Square to Lee Circle, where they came face-to-face with groups of monument supporters who had been there since the morning. Police said more than 700 people were involved in the demonstrations.
Those advocating the removal of the statues chanted slogans like "Go home racists," and "Hey hey, ho ho, white supremacy's got to go."
On the other side, a monument supporter shouted over a megaphone: "We built this country. If you don't like it, there are plenty of other non-white countries you can go to!"

Congo Square? YCMTSU.
The only clash in New Orleans today was London Calling playing on my iPod. .
Protesters around Lee Circle, but no one else in town seemed to give a damn.
Take down the monuments so the school buses can be destroyed during next hurricane.

Like the WHOLE north shore of staten island, after the projects went up.
Italian and Irish and beautiful 50 years ago.
Now halls filled with urine and condoms and needle wrappers.
Every thing they touch, they destroy.
They never bother to know or learn history, they never ever can look at themselves in the mirror and fix what is broken, they point the finger at those around them and blame thier sorry a@@ existance on those who give them free stuff thru tax tax tax. Im sick of them
ANTIFA and their allies are a Soros funded communist insurgency, every bit as dangerous as similar movements in the past, and every bit as ruthless— so milquetoast conservatives will need to pick a side. There are only two sides in this fight, the communists and the anti-communists. If they continue to lose political power, it will become a hot war. I can’t believe threads right here on this forum where people are publically standing with ANTIFA against the supporters of preserving the Confederate monuments— this is exactly what the communists are trying to do. This is one small battle of a much greater war, and if you are with the communists/anarchists, then so be it.

North Newark here in NJ had a horrible case where an Italian neighborhood just north of Route 280 was destroyed 50 years ago to make high-rise projects. The people who complained that it would destroy the neighborhood complained (and were ignored), then fled. A dozen or so years ago, the projects were demolished and replaced with low-rise projects; many of those who protested against the initial destruction were still alive to see their complaints vindicated/validated.
Now Newark is desperately seeking white taxpayers to foot the bill for its residents - unsuccessfully of course. Too many of the whites in surrounding areas either fled themselves, or are the children or grandchildren of those who did. Even the Asians we traffic here as replacement for America’s middle class know you can’t do business in a predominantly black area.
I am tired of the excuses for their failure. Overall, as a race, they aren’t accomplished. It is always someone else’s fault.
Section 8 housing, in White neighborhoods, will cure the ills of failing housing projects.
Sure, but the true purpose (at least here in NJ) is to find taxpayers to pay for the schooling, police/fire protection, etc. for the ghetto folk. Our cities are bankrupt, and state aid dried up as the state went bankrupt as well. State aid was keeping the city employees paid...
It sounds like you’re at the fiscal point where an appeal to Washington, DC is in order. I’d get in line quickly tho, Puerto Rico needs some taxpayer loot and that is going to be a whopper.
That could as easily describe New Orleans' "Lower Ninth Ward" of around the same time period. New Orleanians of my generation usually speak with a New York / New Jersey-like accent, softened a bit around the edges, with an occasional "y'all" thrown in to confuse northerners. You don't hear anyone with a "southern drawl" in New Orleans unless you encounter a transplant from Alabama, Mississippi, etc. - in Louisiana the more traditional "southern accent" is further north. Strange but true.
Some of the houses destroyed in the Lower Ninth by Katrina probably hadn't had a coat of paint applied since before the previous Irish and Italian residents moved out.
Downtown Newark still has remnants of the beauty it once had - I think of all those Philip Roth characters who worked there. As someone who has lived in bad neighborhoods and helped to “gentrify” by merely living there (Ocean Grove & Asbury Park), only to see property taxes go through the roof, I wouldn’t do anything to help a NJ town or city again.

Sister in law is from N’orleans, they live in Dallas, real gentel lady, my niece is looking at schools, I asked about Tulane, my sis said, we decided 5 generations at Tulane was enough, and teared up.
There no longer is a New Orleans, it’s as dead as Julius Caeser.
What a shame man.
