Max, age 13, is agender neither male nor female. When referring to Max, you don't use "he" or "she;" you use "they."
Once strictly a pronoun of the plural variety, "they" is now doing double duty as singular, too referring to individuals, like Max, who do not see gender as an either/or option. (NPR agreed not to use Max's last name, because the family feared the sort of online threats that have been made to other transgender families.)
If the whole he/she pronoun thing feels awkward to you, Max is sympathetic and patient.
'We are seeing more and more kids saying, 'You know what? What's with this either-or business? What's with this boy-girl and you have to fit in one box or the other?' "
"I can't expect anyone to use the right pronouns for me because it's not a thing that people know," Max tells me. "It's been great being myself, but it's also been really hard for people to get it, and for even family to get pronouns and stuff."
Oh FFS...
What an interesting form of birth control. How can someone gender-fluid possibly lock into 18 years of being a mother, much less 9 months of pregnancy? And how can someone gender-fluid possibly slot into a family provider role? Gender-fluid enables teens to remain 6yo forever - or until Daddy’s money runs out.
Who's in charge? The kid or parents? I gotta find a south pacific island to retire at......
I’d bet that it does too. Some representatives from “both” parties are undoubtedly getting gravy from it being funded, therefore it will remain funded, no matter that NPR is a forcibly-taxpayer-funded propaganda arm for the rats and the left. Same with many other entrenched government funded programs, no matter that they all shill for the left. That’s not what’s important, what’s important is that both sides can skim.
Alas, Brave New Babylon.

This boy was ready to kill himself. He called a hotline and was talked out if it.
unlike Rodney Dangerfield, who called the hotline and got talked into it...
Gender refers to language.
Abolutely correct! It's a pity we're the only two people who know that. Referring to your first comment, I'm reminded of my favorite poet, Samuel Hoffenstein, who had the prescience in the 1920s to write:
"Lives there a man with hide so tough
Who thinks two sexes aren't enough?"
Ya gots an innie or an outie when ya popped out.
That’ll do.
At some point in the future they will regard the era we are in as the socialist pc nutbag era.
Exactly.
The third person singular neutral pronoun is not “they”.
It’s “It”!
Absolutely child abuse. I really don't care what people do with their lives if they are over 21. They can have arms attached to their noses for all I care, as long as it doesn't raise my insurance premiums or yours. But it should be a crime for parents or doctors to perform or consent to sex change surgery for anyone younger. A crime with serious penalties.
Gender is for Spanish nouns. If you get the wrong gender you sound stupid.
Sex is for people. If you take the wrong one on a date it’s very embarrassing.
Max isn’t the problem. The problem is NPR and the left takes this mental ill person seriously. Surely Satan is running the show...
I foresee alcoholism, drug addiction, disease, prostitution, mental institutions, rehabs, and suicide attempts in young Max’s bright future
Totally agree. Let NPR move to Mexico or Cuba where it can live in the hellholes they want American cities and towns to become.
NPR mostly lives under the rocks.
See my "kill" tagline. I know it could be a mile long, but these are some favorites in no particular order.
Gender refers to male or female. In the linguistic sense, a few languages attribute maleness or femaleness to inanimate objects and create a grammatical construct around that arbitrary assignment of gender to inanimate objects.
Personally, I prefer to use "gender" because it does not have the connotations of the physical act that are inherent in the word "sex."
I have long observed that the culture takes its cues from the president, and 8 year presidents have very strong influences on culture.
Reagan was the age of macho. The culture was all about tough-guy manliness during his tenure.
Clinton was the age of debauchery.
It’s hard to define the Bush culture; his phrase “compassionate conservatism” does not really describe the culture. But if anything, he brought in the age of globalism.
Obama gave us the age of sexual deviancy and insanity.
Like other cultural influences brought by presidents, that will pass, albeit with some lingering effects. We are witnessing it at its peak, but the president who created that culture is gone and will feed it no longer. Now, we have President Trump. It is too early to predict what will be the defining themes of his culture, but I think it will be a welcome reversal of the utter insanity that Obama wrought.
