When President Obama promised to fundamentally transform America, we had no idea he was secretly plotting to ban biscuits and grits.
The 2010 Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act strictly limited calories, fat, salt, sugar and just about everything else that makes food edible including grits.
We could originally serve half whole grains but that changed in 2012 when we had to start serving 100 percent whole grains, said Stephanie Dillard, the child nutrition director for Geneva County Schools in Alabama.
That meant no more grits.
And grits are a staple in the South, Ms. Dillard told me. Students really want to eat their grits.

“What’s a grit?”
I always had my choirs eat grits; it helped them sing with better hominy.
It usually happens around hominy.
I order shrimp and grits here in KC metro as follows: shrimp and grits, hold the bacon, hold the cheese, light on the green onions, hold the barbecue sauce. Yes, in KC they actually put BBQ sauce on grits. But the end result is very good.
As a person who puts maple syrup on grits, I have say EEEEEW.
But seriously, if you can put (condiment X) on bread, you can put it on grits.
“But the end result is very good.”.......
It all depends on what one likes.
I have a nephew that loves plain cheese pizza, meaning no sauce, nothing other than pizza “bread” with cheese on top, THAT’s it! That can’t even be close to good.
CORN Grits! Yum Yum
Buttered grits
Grits and cheese
Grits and shrimp
Grits: crime solvers, “My Cousin Vinny”
Anyone who regards grocery store grits as “okay,” should check out the Anson Mills grits made from heirloom corn. You’ll never go back to the mass produced stuff.
Lol.. one of my favorite movies. “Thems hominy grits, they’re made out of corn”.
A number of places around Memphis have grits dishes that include BBQ sauce and usually polish sausage. Some are awesome. I’m a real fan of shrimp and grits, too. There’s a place called Humdingers that serves shrimp and grits with a piri-piri sauce that has a real kick to it. I love it. I love just regular old grits with real butter and a little salt. I’m a Southerner, so I guess I just love grits.
My dad went through Parris Island in the 40s. He gained 40 pounds while there.
He always talked about how good the food was.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Grits.
And they are white!
Do you make your grits regular or al dente?
No self respecting southerner uses instant grits
Lol.. that one made me laugh because I never heard of al dente growing up in the south. I eat my pasta al dente and my grits creamy, no sugar, preferably mixed with my eggs. Low country shrimp n grits aren’t bad either.
The pain of it will ease a bit
When you find a man with true grits...
