Well, it's a hopeful get together with son, he has until Sunday night to finish his end of the year Thesis requirement and then email it in. Then he's off until late August but will be working full time until then.

STAN KENTON: “THE MAN I LOVE”

Big Band and Swing Era jazz had its own way of handling the Great American Songbook. It’s very different from what Coleman Hawkins and friends did in a small room. This 1945 recording features one of the great bands with a strong jazz overlay, featuring some amazing alto sax work from Boots Mussulli. In the last 30 seconds, he cuts loose and really lets it swing!

Bet he’s glad to get this leg of school out of the way. Hope y’all can get together for a little while so you can celebrate his accomplishment.

I’ll definitely have pix of the babehs when they arrive. LOL! It won’t be this weekend but they should be here before next weekend. I’ll be shocked if they aren’t.
They must be getting cramped in there. They’re very active tonight and they’ve been pretty quiet up til now. Pixie doesn’t look very happy about it. Can’t imagine why!

The insults that one bandleader or musician would hurl at another echoes what rappers today say about each other. Of Benny Goodman, clarinetist Artie Shaw said, “Goodman plays clarinet; I play music.” Sla-a-a-am! This 1945 recording features Artie’s clarinet, and – yes – it’s very different from Goodman’s way of handling jazz. But both methods are valid. Jerry Gray’s arrangement really showcases the tune.
