Pittman replied, "And if Hitler had won, should the world just get over it? Lincoln was the same sort of tyrant, and personally responsible for the deaths of over 800,000 Americans in a war that was unnecessary and unconstitutional." Pittman did not respond to request for comment from TIME to clarify his remarks.

10th Amendment
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
I think the power to leave could be covered under this provision. More convoluted interpretations of the constitution have certainly been made by our illustrious courts. I have a hard time believing our freedom loving forefathers would have agreed to enter into a union that they couldn't leave especially after they had just fought for their freedom.
Yup. Lincoln did more damage to the Constitution than almost any other president.
Only an idiot would make such a pronouncement.
Wilson was indeed a regressive democrat who believed in big government. He was also a nasty white supremacist and neo-confederate sympathizer who grew up in Virginia and said one of his earliest memories was seeing Jefferson Davis arrested by the union army. Your fellow neo-confederates loved Wilson and overwhelmingly continued to vote for Wilson no matter much he pushed for the expansion of the federal government.
“As it happened, the end of that institution was a fortunate outcome but not the reason for the war itself.”
Oh, I thought you had made the case the reason for the war was slavery. If you did not, many northerners who attended public schools do.
“That’s the first time I’ve heard that the American Revolution was motivated by slavery.”
I am not surprised. I am of the understanding that history isn’t taught in public schools much anymore.
If you read the DOI, I think you’ll find what I said is true.
Let's look at your original question: "If the South was fighting for slavery during Lincoln's War, who was fighting against slavery?" You're right that the South was fighting for slavery. The South seceded to defend slavery. The South started the war. So the reason for the war can easily be connected to slavery. But you also asked if the North was fighting to end slavery. They were not, not directly.
Bullcrap
Hitler was worse because of the death camps.
Agreed
But Lincoln bombed the blacks towns and homesites.
Baloney
And had he lived, blacks would have been loaded on to boxcars, and shipped to Africa.
Total bullcrap
This klown pittman picked a rather large stage to make an ass of himself.
Sherman’s goons torched everything including slave cabins/shacks.
I have read the Declaration of Independence and since neither slavery or property are mentioned then I don't see what supports your claim that the colonists rebelled to defend slavery. If you're referring to the "excited domestic insurrections amongst us" to mean slave rebellions, well, there is a lot to dispute in that.
The thing any reasonable thinking person has to keep in mind when reading those words is that they were entirely mainstream for the times. Judging history - or historical characters - through the lens of contemporary times is the height of foolishness.
Lincoln was no more a racist than any of us, and certainly less than any of the southern insurrectionists.
Why even put Lincoln into discussion of same-sex marriage? This lawmaker detracts from the fight in this very important moral issue by inserting his very marginal viewpoint on Lincoln. It takes away from the real fight, allows the opponents to deflect the discussion and is yet another piece of evidence the left can use to portray conservative as lost cause-obsessed.
James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and others all wrote about states leaving the Union and in every instance they visualized it as a negotiated separation approved by both the states remaining as well as the states leaving. At no time did they say that states could just up and walk out for any reason or for no reason at all and without resolving any points of contention ahead of time. The South did not follow that. They walked out without discussion and without resolving issues like debt or property.
Nice response! I’m glad I read through all the replies before crafting a post to rebut this foolishness!
OTOH, if you favor States rights then Lincoln was one of the worst...if not the worst President of all time.
To put Lincoln's Civil War conduct into context, I think we need to look at Jefferson Davis's heavy handed reign in the Confederacy. I think Lincoln comes out much better in the comparison.
It should also be noted that Abraham Lincoln's views on race changed throughout his life. The views of the 1840's Lincoln weren't the same as his views later in life. He was heavily influenced by Frederick Douglass.
I honestly do not see how you guys can last for hundreds and hundreds of replies from these people. It’s incredible how much reality that they can ignore.
And we can see expressions of the exact same sentiment on Democratic Underground since President Trump won the election.
Agreed - thanks for the reply.
