Wilson was indeed a regressive democrat who believed in big government. He was also a nasty white supremacist and neo-confederate sympathizer who grew up in Virginia and said one of his earliest memories was seeing Jefferson Davis arrested by the union army. Your fellow neo-confederates loved Wilson and overwhelmingly continued to vote for Wilson no matter much he pushed for the expansion of the federal government.
