The way to stay in business is to offer what your customers want and to be nice to them while providing it.

OK,sweetie....tell me this.Which laws,if any,did United or any of the security/police personnel involved in that incident break?

We're talking legality here,not PR.

“Did United Airlines Violate Its Own Contract By Forcing That Passenger Off The Plane?”

“A review of United’s “Contract of Carriage” suggests that the airline carrier violated its own rules when it forcibly removed a passenger to make room for United employees.”

And that’s a big part of the thing. No one can deny that this was a PR botch of epic proportions - and there are enforcements of rules on bumping or cancellations that cause me to not fly certain airlines, or to build the possibility of being bumped into my itinerary (it’s not a particularly rare event that *someone* is bumped, usually not just a particular person).

The guy had every right to be upset about being bumped - even extremely so - but once he was told to leave, he had to leave. Instead, he chose to make it a physical altercation with Security and not walk off the plane like a human.

The article has about a thousand words about PR and virtually none about legalities. So where did your caustic, demeaning comment come from, sweetie?

Being right and legal worked out well for United, didn’t it?

"We're talking legality here,not PR."

Ok, let's talk legality - since when is assault legal? Where in the contract of purchasing an airline ticket does it say that "violence may be employed on customers at will"?

At the heart of this matter is whether service providers can not only deny service but can physically harm individuals who are not committing any violent act or threat, for the sole purpose of maximizing profit.

What do you think, Sweetie?

I don’t think you read the article. It’s one of the first things she covered. You are talking legally. She is talking PR. That is how a company stays in business: Treating their customers in a way that they choose to purchase your product.

Legally, a store could be open only from noon to one pm, tuesday through thursday. It doesn’t mean they are going to stay in business.

A great part of the article was that they did not break laws because they are backed by a government that allows them to be assholes with impunity. They did not break any laws, but they behaved like Soviet tyrants and people are getting tired of it. Just because the government allows them to be assholes does not mean they should be.

If UA sticks to this defense, our boilerplate allowed us to do it, they might win in court, but it’ll be a Pyrrhic victory. Because wars like this aren’t just fought in a courtroom. They’re also fought in the court of public opinion. Someone should explain that to UA’s board.

Legality. Yes let’s talk about a private airline using the Chicago PD for non security issues. 4 senators are opening an investigation into that as well as the fact that United likely went beyond the FAA legal boundaries for over booking.

I agree totally with this writer's premise that the airlines stink....I fly only if I absolutely must...

seats way too small...the airline people treat you like they're doing you a big favor after charging you up the ying yang....its waiting, taking shoes off, waiting, lining up, possessions searched, more waiting...etc...

Not a pleasant experience...

however, this idiot doctor was told to get up and get off the plane...the airlines have this right and we agree to it when we use their business...

and for the record, wasn't it the cops who took him off the plane?....

many freepers are wrong on this incident....

it was a typical "I'm too important to follow the rules or listen to the cops" attitude from this doctor....

Hey there, sweetie, if I apply the H.Clinton Email standard of law, the airline is possibly 0.1mm on the legal side of the line. It is true that the law requires that we obey the instructions of flight crews at all times.

Which opens up new possibilities for refreshingly hypocrisy-free procedures:

"I have an announcement to make. We have four people who need to board this plane and they are more important than any of you. So I need four of you out of your seats. In return, you'll get a free bag of peanuts and a taxi ride to the Greyhound depot.

Let's see....you, you, you....and you.

Now GET THE LEAD OUT, MAGGOTS!!"
