Russias unexpected announcement recognizing Israels eternal capital of Jerusalem, a dramatic decision that places Vladimir Putin against Donald Trump in a totally new big-power rivalry the race to Jerusalem.
Many American and Israeli Jews have waited with mounting impatience for Trump to keep his campaign promise to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Against an atmosphere of US equivocation, Putin suddenly announced, without preamble or restricting conditions, the recognition of Israels capital, to take effect immediately.

Thanks for the clarification. It occurs to me that Putin may be angling for Israel to approve of a continued Russian presence in Syria as a stabilizing presence should some kind of negotiated agreement happen. Putin is very shrewd in playing both sides of the fence.
“We reaffirm our commitment to the UN-approved principles for a Palestinian-Israeli settlement, which include the status of East Jerusalem as the capital of the future Palestinian state,” the ministry said.
“At the same time, we must state that in this context we view West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.”

The last I remember, Net and Putin were getting along just fine.
I don’t agree. the reprisal was a non-event to the Russians. Forewarned and Runway not targeted. This is T-ball. He caused the minimalist damage for the maximum message. We’ll hear some pissing and moaning, but they won’t do anything unless they really do want conflict ... and I don’t think The really want to swap lives right now.
I hope our Navy is in Tip top shape and leadership de-pussyfied. Motivated sailors and working equipment go hand in hand.
I wouldn’t mind this. Immediately cut off aid to the Palestinians. When they look at Russia’s deal, they’ll come begging for more aide and try to play both sides.
I guess my point is that this makes Trump look good. Don’t see this as any threat or negative.
Go back to DU.
Heh.
I was just fixin’ to ask him how much Share Blue is paying.
IIRC, He left the final decision to Net.
IIRC, there were 13 embassies in Jerusalem at one time.
What’s wrong with Tel Aviv that my tax dollars have to be spent to facilitate a move?
Will Israel give back the Russian Hotel built by the Czar in the 19th Century? Russians might want it for their embassy. What does this mean? If Iran Nukes Jerusalem—they will be attacking Russian soil and may invite a Russian counter Strike. Looks like Putin made a counter move in “The Great game”—Next move now goes to Trump. This was unforseen—but bold. A Beau Geist on the part of Russia.
Notice how careful Putin is to distinguish East and West Jerusalem. For Israel, there is only one united Jerusalem. So this announcement soesn’t change much.
Hmmmm
At the same time, we must state that in this context we view West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
“Dah, Comrade Vladimer - like old times in Berlin- now to call Israel “East Palestine”.
That’s the way I see it. It’s a shrewd “chess” game.
Winning.
Because this is Passover. The timing is a grand gesture. I think Putin’s learning a sense of theatre from Trump!
As for why, I think in many ways Russia is trying to extricate itself from some of its questionable ME alliances of convenience. Assad, for example: just before the US bombing, Russia said it was not inflexible in maintaining Assad and would be open to discussing a way of replacing him (a good idea, in my opinion, because he has become such a point of conflict and a recruiting tool for the Islamists). So I think the Russians were also finding him a bit of an embarrassment.
And last but not least, their own Muslims are heating up again. The St Petersburg attack was carried out by a person from Kyrgyzstan and may have been coordinated from somewhere in that region, and the one person apprehended in the Stockholm attack was Chechen. So sucking up to the Muslims hasn’t helped very much.
