Sometimes it takes an everyday chore for someone spoiled to realize they have it pretty good. Like, say, using a broom.

Old Reader's Digest "Humor in Uniform" entry.
Army boot camp. Sarge tells one guy to grab a broom and sweep out the barracks. Guy whines "But, Sarge, I'm a college graduate." Sarge says, "Oh, then let me show you how."
When I was a teenager, working on your own car was the norm. Today’s kids probably don’t even know how to open the hood, let alone know how to do an oil change or even swap out windshield wipers.
Yup,we had "Heartbreak" Hill at Ft Knox.About 10PM,about 10 degrees (December).
I made my daughter change a tire before she ever got her license.
You know, tires have gotten so much better that I haven’t had to change a tire in over 20 years. My dad did the same thing, I had to change a tire before he’d let me drive and he insisted on a stick shift so I’d be less detached from the workings of the car and how it reacted on the road. But, I can’t honestly say I’d know how to use the jack in either of my cars now, I’ve never even looked at the spare. Might have to go do that, feel like I’ve tempted the flat tire fates, lol.
I am so lucky that I grew up in my grandparents house whom took me as their own son and raised me. I was raised with the sensibilities that was instilled in them during the depression and WWII. They gave me home, food, and guidance.
I worked for money if I wanted to buy something for myself. At 16 years of age I worked on The River as a deckhand during the summers until I was 18. At 18 I roughnecked on the drilling rigs to earn money for college.
My beloved grandparents were retired and could not pay for my college and that was good! In 1966 there were no Federal Programs for tuition. Thus what I learned in university was all mine by my own dent. My grandparents gave me a great gift by only helping me grow up. Once when I was broke I did call and ask for a few dollars so I could eat. I was in college at the time. They sent some money.
My grandfather taught me to hunt and fish. I will never go hungry, as I now live in the countryside and will never live in a city.
Other parents of immense wealth have provided everything for their children. My grandparents provided me with far more than money can buy.
ps
When they were old my brother and I took care of them. They had done the same for him as they did for me.
This kid drove a little '67 Opel Kadett at school. One day he called me from a gas station the other side of Phoenix and said his car had quit on him while driving down the freeway and could I come pick him up.
When I got to the gas station, I asked what had happened to the car. He said the gas station had towed it back to their mechanic. The engine had seized up. It had no oil in it. He had driven the car without putting oil in it at all and it just finally overheated and ground to a halt. He said the mechanic told him it probably would need a new engine.
I asked him what he was going to do about it. He told the mechanic that he could keep the car and do what he wanted with it.
He said his dad would just buy him a new one. And he did.
NOW THAT'S SPOILED! :-)
> It is not new <
The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise.

Of course most of the other insurance ads are also annoying.
Yup
Went to many shows back in the day. Once upon a time they used to have shows in the infield of Churchill Downs. Long Run Pony Club hosted it. We stabled in the same stables for the racers. A special place.
Man, what memories. Almost did a Christopher Reeves there on the jumper course. Went into a in-and-out combination wrong and the horse said nope in the middle. Went flying over his ears. Landed on my head. Rubbing the back of my neck, I think I popped a vertebrae back into place walking back to the stable. That’s what it felt like. You’re invincible at that age, you know.
Yea, my whole spine is messed up. Football didn’t help either.
Man, I’m feeling old.
At least you had fun and have those great memories.
Just got back from lunch with a man who won a couple silver medals in eventing back in the day. He’s one of the lucky ones...not hobbling around - but my daughter definitely has her problems including a recent issue with fractured ribs. I asked her what happened and she said “the horse went right and I went left”.
I wish she’d take up dressage but so far she won’t.
Momma always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun.....
But momma, that’s where the fun is....
Actually had a trainer once, who used to teach dressage in addition to the other disciplines. Taught me a lot of great things that really helped out in the Hunter/Jumper arena. Even if she doesn’t take it up, it wouldn’t hurt her to look into some training sessions with a like minded trainer.
“Be one with the horse, Spock.” (And there’s nothing like it when you are)
Our daughter’s friend came to live with us the summer after high school graduation. Her clunker would barely get down the road and she was clueless about opening the hood. Hubby taught her to do simple maintenance on it.
Our teenage great-nephews are clueless about anything outside a foot around their phones. They’ve never been made to do anything. For starters they aren’t allowed to play outside so they are afraid of bugs, stickers and fresh air. Of course, they’re also afraid of riding a bike.
The ad that annoys me is the one with the black couple. It’s obvious the wife is standing on a riser or she has the most disproportionate body every.
I went through there in ‘84-’85. Good place to have reality butt stroke you to the head. Then get bitten all over by those d—m sand fleas to add insult to injury.
We had to learn that in driver’s ed. Also how to put on tire chains. I don’t think kids get driver’s ed anywhere, now. (We’ve noticed in our area how knowledge and skill at driving have really fallen down. People don’t use their turn signals, leave no space at intersections, and are constantly fooling with their phones...)
