THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

GEORGE GERSHWIN

OH, KAY!

BARBRA STREISAND: “SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME”

In 1962, my godmother went to New York to see the musical “I Can Get It For You Wholesale.” She came back to Philadelphia raving about this girl in a minor part named Barbra Streisand, whom she swore would become a star. She got that one right.

This is from 1965, long before Barbra became a scold and totally insufferable. She opts for intimacy, better to show off her vocal chops.

OH, KAY!

FRANK SINATRA: “SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME”

Frank recorded this twice in his career. This comes from his radio days and the Axel Stordahl era, which is instantly recognizable by the sugary treatment of the song.

Frank Sinatra: “Someone to Watch Over Me” (1945)

The appearance of the song in “Young at Heart” from 1954 is good, but a bit distracting. There are no distractions in this 1954 arrangement, which cuts right to the bone.

OH, KAY!

STING: “SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME”

More than one flagging pop music career has been invigorated by turning to the Great American Songbook. String’s 1996 version is right out of the piano bar and is a perfectly intimate way to portray the song. E-flat is wonderful key for this tune, and the middle eight just breaks your heart.

I was surprised at just how good his version is. When he hit the middle eight bars, my screen got blurry.
