Fresh off a defeat on U.S. healthcare legislation, the White House warned rebellious conservative lawmakers that they should get behind President Donald Trump's agenda or he may bypass them on future legislative fights, including tax reform.
The threat by White House chief of staff Reince Priebus to build a broad coalition on tax reform that could include moderate Democrats came as the Republican head of the tax-writing committee in the House of Representatives said he hoped to move a tax bill through his panel this spring.
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady said his committee had been working on tax reform in parallel with the failed healthcare reform push.
"We've never stopped working," Brady told Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo." "We will continue to make improvements."
Brady said the committee plans to move on the bill in the spring. He said he wanted the House blueprint to be the basis for Trump's tax reform plan rather than have competing versions from Treasury and the White House.
Both Trump and Priebus have scolded hardline conservatives who rejected legislation backed by the White House to overhaul Obamacare.
Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," Priebus held out the possibility of working with moderate Democrats as well as Republicans to pass other aspects of Trump's agenda, such as his proposed budget, the revamp of the tax code and a renewed effort at healthcare reform.
"If we can come up with a bill that accomplishes the goals of the president with Republicans alone, we'll take it and we'll move forward with it," Priebus said.

Because the Republican party does not want to repeal Obamacare without putting something very much like it in its place.
Now that they’ve caught the care, they are afraid of it.
“Rather than accept Ryancare warts and all and live to fight another day they chose to be arsonists.”
Please stop that BS.
FC just saved Trump his presidency by denying the Ryancare’s morphing into Trumpcare.
If Trump starts aligning himself with the Democrats in Taxes, then there isn’t ANYONE that can save it.
Mr. President, please don’t preside over a failed presidency — listen to FC concerns rather than threatening to move to the left. Republicans control both houses and the WH. In a few months, USSC is going to be conservative, as well. Don’t squander this once in a century opportunity.
amen brother.
I think his daughter and son in law are liberal poison.
Trump didn't want repeal only. He campaigned on giving people better coverage at a lower cost. (Probably impossible to do, but that's what he campaigned on.)
“were SO nasty towards Ted Cruz supporters can appreciate now what our concerns are. “
There is no point in opening the old wounds.
The primary is over, the election is over. Now is time to govern as conservatives with REPEAL, Tax Cuts, and law and order enforcements.
Well, hell, some of my most scintillating prose was in that other locked thread.
I’ll offer up just a tidbit.
Y’all do know a Continuing Resolution has to pass fairly soon (not to mention the Debt Ceiling increase end of April) and guess what’s in the CR. By definition a continuation of current funding for all budget items.
That means Obamacare, and its juicy funding for healthcare for illegals.
The FC is gonna have to vote for that, because no Dems will vote for anything whatsoever Trump wants.
That will be interesting, yes?
All this talk of pivoting to tax reform is mostly coming out of Wall Street, who are desperate for stimulus. Pretty silly. I suspect they’ll bog down for weeks or months on the debt ceiling and CR. Tax Reform will get zero attention as soon as the pressures build.
Well...as I see it, he’s forcing the Dems to either “reveal their position” (i.e. identify themselves) or let it become obvious that there are none.
Trump is a brilliant strategist.
“Hey Republicans, don’t want to play with me? There are others ya know.”
Shame sometimes works.
Don't you see the great irony in that?
The Democrats might win House seats in 2018 -- maybe even enough to get a majority. But the seats they are most likely to win aren't the Freedom Caucus seats ... they're the seats of the moderate "Tuesday Group" Republicans who were opposed to Ryan's bill.
So why all the anger against the Freedom Caucus members, instead of the Tuesday Group members?
“Trump didn’t want repeal only. He campaigned on giving people better coverage at a lower cost. (Probably impossible to do, but that’s what he campaigned on.)”
I understand that, but I imagine that they could just say let’s pass the repeal bill first and then do the replacement later? (probably impossible to do too)
The legislation that POTUS wanted to pass would have increased premiums, increased the deficit and eliminated coverage for 15 million people. This is what you voted for? Trump needs to get with the conservative agenda.... fast.
The bill would have given us a lot of important things we wanted. Now we get NOTHING. And eventually we get a rub salt in the wounds “clean” obamacare fix that will make road kill of the freedom caucus.
Why is this so hard? Democrats are literally dancing in the streets at torpedoing the first major item on POTUS’s agenda. Buy a clue. We’ve got to stick together behind POTUS or it’s all over. The wall, trade, everything. Over. It’s that simple.
Because now its for real and the specter of 20 million people losing their healthcare is a political death wish.
Rather than negotiate w/ Trump the FC decided to play hardball and humiliate him. Now the press and the progressives are licking their chops.
There's blood in the water.
The entire movement hangs by a thread. I've been coming to FR for 20 years or so and we have never had the complete toolbox.
Now that we do it appears we are bound and determined to self-incinerate.
Please put down the matches.
And how did standing true work for everyone? We still have Obamacare!!
Mr. President, please dont preside over a failed presidency listen to FC concerns rather than threatening to move to the left. Republicans control both houses and the WH. In a few months, USSC is going to be conservative, as well. Dont squander this once in a century opportunity.
Yep. USSC can be conservative thanks to Trump. Not thanks to the arsonists in the freedom caucus. How’s that freedom caucus obamacare repeal and replace going? Got a whip count for me? “You break it you own it” comes to mind here, FRiend.
None of it makes any sense at all. Trumps actions the past couple weeks make no sense at all.
No, it wasn't. President Trump wanted it because that was the bill that was cobbled together by the House leadership. If the bill repealed Obamacare and replaced with a single-payer system he would have supported it. If the bill repealed Obamacare and replaced it with another bill that was identical to Obamacare he would have supported it. If the bill required everyone in the U.S. to get a lobotomy he would have supported it. He's been all over the map on this issue and got himself involved in a process that was completely out of his control.
If Trump really wanted that bill then I would ask two questions:
1. Why didn't he make a single nationally televised appeal to lay out the terms of the bill and explain to Americans why it was a good idea?
2. Why would he ever accept a rushed, half-assed process with an artificial deadline set by Paul Ryan that was only established so it would coincide with the anniversary of the original Obamacare legislation? Trump probably spent more time figuring out the paint color schemes for Trump Tower than he spent working on a this bill.
“No, I dont advocate that. Im close to the anarchy side of (l)ibertarian. I would burn the entirety of DC to the ground. But I also recognize political reality.”
Fair enough, Mariner. I misconstrued your post. But I think passing a market based replacement bill is a reality if Trump would get behind it and someone other than Ryan was the spokesman for it.
The Dims would have hung RyanCare (TrumpCare, ObummerCare 2.0, whatever) around the Republicans necks for several election cycles because it was doomed to be a failure at reducing premium costs.
Maybe he is a "compassionate conservative".
That is 100% false. No House bill that defunded Planned Parenthood would ever survive a Democrat filibuster in the Senate.
I'll go one step further ...
No House bill that defunded Planned Parenthood would even get 50 REPUBLICAN votes in the Senate.
That whole "defund Planned Parenthood" thing was just a political canard.
